The Auburn Police Department is reminding parents and guardians that they may be held financially responsible for damages caused by a child operating an e motorcycle, dirt bike or similar vehicle, particularly when those vehicles are ridden recklessly or illegally on public roadways.
Police said that parents or guardians could be liable for damage to public or private property, injuries and other damages resulting from collisions caused by reckless or negligent operation, as well as towing and impound fees if a vehicle is impounded.
The reminder follows a video submitted to the department by a concerned citizen that shows an incident at the intersection of Evergreen Way SE and Lakeland Hills Way SE (see video below). Police did not provide additional details about the incident.
The department said it is unlawful to operate an unlicensed e motorcycle on public roadways. Riders must have a valid driver’s license with a motorcycle endorsement if the vehicle requires registration and licensing. Police said operators are responsible for knowing and following all applicable laws before riding.
Police also urged parents and guardians to ensure minors understand and follow state laws and safety requirements before allowing them to operate e motorcycles, dirt bikes or similar vehicles.
The department emphasized that whether someone is riding an e bike or an e motorcycle, all rules of the road apply.
“Responsible riding helps protect riders, pedestrians, motorists, and everyone else in our community,” the Auburn Police Department said.
Additional information about e bike laws and safety is available from the City of Auburn.
