A Washington State Patrol (WSP) airplane known as “Smokey” helped troopers capture a fleeing motorcyclist early Sunday, Aug. 3, 2025 after a high-speed chase through Auburn and the surrounding area, authorities said.
The pursuit began when “Smokey” observed a motorcycle traveling 96MPH in a 60MPH zone on northbound SR 167 in Auburn, according to Trooper Rick Johnson.
When troopers attempted a traffic stop, the rider fled, leading officers on a chase through Auburn, Federal Way, and the Lake Tapps area.
After the rider parked the bike in a garage and switched to another vehicle, an observant trooper noticed a man matching the rider’s description. The vehicle was stopped, and the suspect was arrested for investigation of DUI and attempting to elude police.
The man was booked into jail, and the motorcycle was seized as evidence.
