Auburn Police to install 20 Flock Safety Cameras to assist crime prevention

The Auburn Police Department this week announced plans to install 20 license plate recognition (LPR) – aka “Flock” – cameras throughout the city in an effort to reduce and solve crime.

The cameras, developed by Flock Safety, will help law enforcement by providing real-time alerts when a stolen vehicle or wanted suspect is detected. The technology can also assist in locating vehicles associated with AMBER or Silver Alerts for missing persons.

The Flock Safety system captures license plates and vehicle characteristics rather than faces or people, ensuring the cameras are used solely for solving and reducing property and violent crime, not minor traffic violations. Each search conducted with the system requires justification, and the data is not sold or shared with third parties.

“Flock safety cameras have become an invaluable tool in helping keep the community safe,” said Auburn Police Chief Mark Caillier. “In the short time they have been deployed in Auburn, they’ve aided in recovering stolen vehicles and in locating and arresting two homicide suspects.”

According to the International Association of Chiefs of Police, 70% of crimes are committed using a vehicle. The Auburn Police Department hopes that the new LPR cameras will significantly improve its ability to solve cases with objective evidence. Flock Safety’s system is already in use in over 5,000 communities across the U.S. and is credited with helping law enforcement solve 10% of reported crimes nationwide. Communities using Flock Safety technology have seen crime reductions of up to 70%.

“At Flock Safety, we believe in building strong bonds between police departments and the citizens they pledge to protect, and we’re proud to partner with the Auburn Police Department to help them in the pursuit of public safety,” said Garrett Langley, CEO of Flock.
