Nature lovers and birding enthusiasts are invited to explore the fascinating world of woodpeckers at a free educational talk hosted by Soos Creek Botanical Garden on Wednesday, May 21.

The event, part of the Garden’s “Pavilion by the Pond” program, will feature master birder and author Connie Sidles, who will present “Woodpeckers of Washington” from 12:30 to 2 p.m. at the garden’s scenic grounds located at 29308 132nd Avenue SE in Auburn (map below).

Sidles will share insights into all 13 species of woodpeckers found throughout Washington, from the lowlands to the foothills.

“These birds are colorful, charismatic and critical to the ecosystem,” Sidles said.

The program will explore how these remarkable birds search for food, raise their young, and communicate—often by pecking up to 20 times per second into solid wood.

Attendees will gain a deeper appreciation for these “colorful and charismatic” birds, which Sidles says are a critical part of the state’s ecosystems.

The event is free and open to the public.
