With the school year about to start Sept. 3, Auburn Police are reminding drivers to slow down in school zones and know when to stop for school buses.

The department shared a traffic safety message urging motorists to “Slow down, put kids first” and to follow state law when school bus stop bars are out and lights are flashing.

On two-lane roads, traffic in both directions must stop.

For roads with a center turning lane or three or more lanes, only vehicles traveling in the same direction as the bus must stop.

When there is a median or barrier, drivers traveling in the opposite direction may proceed with caution, but vehicles behind the bus must stop.

Police stressed that school speed zone cameras are active and violations can result in citations.
