As the school year begins, Auburn Police are reminding drivers about when to stop for a school bus.
A graphic shared by the department outlines the requirements for stopping when the school bus stop sign and flashing lights are activated.
These rules are in place to protect children as they board and exit the bus.
Police said that if you don’t stop, you could face a $428 fine.
Additionally, if an officer isn’t present, the school bus driver can write down your license plate, and the vehicle owner will receive a ticket.
Here’s what drivers need to know:
- Two-Lane Roads: Vehicles in both directions must stop.
- Turning Lane: Drivers must stop if traveling in the same direction as the bus.
- Three or More Lane Roads: Only vehicles traveling in the same direction as the bus are required to stop.
- Roads with Medians: Vehicles must stop if traveling in the same direction as the bus; those on the other side of the median may proceed with caution.
The Auburn Police Department emphasizes that failure to stop when required can result in fines and poses significant risks to children’s safety.
Parents and guardians are encouraged to discuss these rules with their children to ensure they are aware of traffic conditions when getting on or off the bus.
