Officers with the Auburn Police Department found themselves responding to some unusually heartwarming calls over the weekend, including the rescue of eight baby ducks and an injured hawk.
On June 14, Officers Wright and Nelson were dispatched to assist a group of ducklings that had fallen into a storm drain. Using a bucket and a good deal of patience, the officers were able to safely remove all eight ducklings and reunite them with their mother nearby.
“It was a brief, heartwarming moment sandwiched between two much more intense calls,” the department said in a statement.
Just one day later, Officer Haydon responded to a report of an injured hawk near SR-18. A veterinary technician had stopped to help, and with remote guidance from a wildlife rehabilitation expert, only needed assistance in securing the area. Haydon arrived with a tote, helped safely contain the bird, and ensured its transport to a rehabilitation center.
“These animal rescues might seem small, but in the middle of fast-paced, emotionally charged shifts, they can be a much-needed moment to breathe,” Auburn Police wrote.
The department praised its officers for showing compassion and flexibility during a weekend that also included more stressful calls.
“We’re proud of our officers for being ready to handle everything, from the difficult to the delicate,” the post concluded.
