King County shares flood cleanup and claims guidance as residents begin recovery

King County is directing residents affected by flooding to a centralized online hub of recovery resources, including guidance on safe cleanup, debris disposal and steps for documenting damage and filing claims.

“Damage caused by flooding is overwhelming and stressful,” King County said in a public advisory promoting its flood recovery information page at kingcounty.gov/flood-recovery.

The county described the site as a one stop source for resources from across King County government to help people respond to and recover from extensive flooding in the region.

Clean up and debris disposal

  • Bring garbage, recycling and yard waste to King County solid waste facilities.

  • Sort materials before dropping off flood debris when possible.

    • Separate yard waste from garbage.

    • Keep hazardous waste separate from other debris.

  • If hazardous products got wet or damaged, set them aside in a safe location until proper disposal.

  • Do not open containers or try to empty them. Leave labels on so staff can identify the product.

  • If a container is leaking, place it inside a sturdy bin or bucket to contain the spill.

  • Keep hazardous materials away from children and pets.

  • For hazardous product spills:

    • Only clean up spills after floodwaters have receded and the area is dry and aired out.

    • Wear gloves, long sleeves and eye protection while cleaning.

If your home is flooded

  • Turn off utilities before re entering your home.

  • Do not touch electrical equipment while touching water. Call your utility to disconnect service.

  • Avoid touching flood water and wash hands and pets after exposure.

  • Wear an N95 mask, gloves, goggles and protective gear when cleaning.

  • Open windows and doors and pump out water after floodwaters recede.

  • Be aware that mold can begin growing within 24 to 48 hours after a flood.

Resources for filing a claim

  • Gather your information:

    • Home insurance policy number.

    • Insurance company contact information.

    • Personal details.

  • Document the disaster:

    • Record the date, time and cause of damage.

    • Write a detailed description of what happened.

  • Make a list of damaged or missing property.

    • Take clear photos and videos of all damage, inside and outside your home.

  • Save all receipts for repairs, replacements and disaster related costs.

  • Act quickly:

    • Photograph and record damage before cleaning up, repairing or discarding items.

  • Record serial numbers for electronics and appliances when possible.

    • Clearly describe all damage and impacts during your assessment.
