Cleanup crews are working to mitigate fuel contamination after recent flooding caused gasoline to enter floodwaters near a Chevron station at South 277th Street and Auburn Way North, according to the City of Auburn Emergency Management.

City officials said a licensed contractor is actively conducting mitigation and cleanup at the site. During that work, fuel odors may be released into the air and could be strong at times.

The Valley Regional Fire Authority, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and the Washington State Department of Ecology are aware of the situation and are assessing conditions, the city said.

Residents who notice particularly strong, bothersome, or distracting fuel odors are asked to call 911 so responders can assess conditions in real time.

Cleanup efforts are expected to continue as safely and quickly as possible. The city thanked residents for their patience and directed the public to auburnwa.gov/flood for ongoing flood related updates.
