Starting on Monday, Sept. 23, 2024, the City of Auburn will be making changes to its downtown parking regulations in an effort to simplify parking and improve accessibility for residents, visitors, and businesses.

The updates, which focus on consolidating time limits and streamlining parking signs, aim to reduce confusion without imposing stricter parking rules.

“It is known that Dowtown Auburn has a wide range of posted time restrictions that seem to have evolved and changed over time,” the city said. “An inventory was taken of all the different parking signs and we found there are currently thirteen different types of parking signs and restrictions downtown which will soon be condensed to only two.”

The city discovered 13 different types of parking signs in the downtown area, and decided that to make parking easier for everyone, the city will reduce these to just two types.

Key among the changes is the standardization of parking time limits. On-street parking that is currently marked for two or three hours will now have a consistent limit of three hours, Monday through Friday, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., excluding holidays. Additionally, loading zones and 15-minute parking spots will be converted to “No Parking Loading Zones,” in which vehicles may only stop to actively load or unload for up to 15 minutes, in accordance with state law.

The city’s decision to simplify the signage is intended to make parking more straightforward and accessible for drivers while maintaining the same level of flexibility for downtown businesses and visitors.
