VRFA Blotter: Smokey Cooking Causes Alarm to Send for Fire Department

The Valley Regional Fire Authority responded to 309 calls for service for the week of October 3-10, 2021. Year to Date our Valley Professional Firefighters have responded to a total of 11,669 calls.  This is a 14.9% increase from 2020 (10,158).

Call Breakdown:

219 (71%) were aid calls. Total aid calls in 2021 so far are 8,653 up 15.9%, compared to 2020’s (7,465).

9 (3%) were fire calls. The number of fire calls is up by 18.9%, with 2021 having 421 calls and 2020 having 354.

81 (26%) were calls categorized as other. The number of other calls is up (10.9%), with 2021 currently at 2,595 calls compared to 2020’s 2,339. Other calls include water rescues, hazmat calls, and ladder requests.

VRFA Calls for Service

  • Aid Call: (Lea Hill) On Monday, October 4 at 7:42 a.m., firefighters responded to an adult male
    with low oxygen levels and weakness due to COVID. Patient was treated and transported to
    Valley Medical Center by private ambulance.
  • CPR: (Pacific) On Wednesday, October 6 at 4:33 a.m., firefighters responded to a possible
    unconscious male at a gas station. Firefighters arrived to find the patient unconscious without
    a pulse and began CPR. Firefighters and King County Medic One paramedics treated the patient
    who regained a pulse. King County Medic One transported the patient to MultiCare Auburn
    Medical Center for continued care.
  • Aid Call: (Auburn) On Wednesday, October 6 at 9:57 a.m., firefighters responded to an adult
    male that was possibly struck by or thrown from a vehicle. Firefighters arrived to find a male
    laying in the roadway with facial and pelvic injuries. The patient was treated and transported to
    Harborview Medical Center by King County Medic One.
  • Aid Call: (Auburn) On Thursday, October 7 at 7:45 a.m., A331 and Medic 6 responded to an
    adult male suffering from a diabetic emergency with a blood glucose of 30 mg/dl. Firefighters
    took vitals and assisted the Paramedics with rescue breathing while medic 6 started an IV access
    for medications and intubated the patient. Medic 6 and A331 transported the patient to Multicare
    Auburn Medical Center for further evaluation and treatment.
  • Residential Fire Alarm: (Lakeland Hills) On Thursday, October 7, 2021 at 3:48 p.m., Firefighters
    responded to reports of smoke detector activation inside a residence. The homeowner gave the
    proper codes to the alarm company to request cancel, there was no fire – it was his wife cooking.
  • Auto Accident: (Auburn) On Friday, October 8 at 9:20 p.m., firefighters responded with
    Washington State Patrol to a 2-vehicle accident on SR 167. On arrival, an SUV was on its side
    and another vehicle had damage to the driver’s side. A witness reported that the vehicle was
    traveling at a high rate of speed and ran out of room while trying to pass, side swiping the other
    involved vehicle. Fortunately, no one was seriously injured. The scene was left to WSP.
  • Apartment Fire: (Federal Way) On Friday, October 8 at 3:20 p.m., VRFA firefighters responded
    mutual aid with South King Fire for an apartment fire. VRFA units assisted with command
    functions and L331 preformed truck work utilizing ground ladders and chainsaws to access the
    fire.
  • Dog Bite: (Lea Hill) On Saturday, October 9 at 5:30 p.m., firefighters responded to a young girl
    who had been bit by a neighbor’s dog. Firefighters evaluated the patient and determined that
    she required further treatment in a hospital setting. The patient was taken to the hospital by her
    mother.
  • Aid Call: (Auburn) On Sunday, October 10 at 7:32 a.m., firefighters assisted an adult male
    complaining of a panic attack. Firefighters assessed the patient and transported him MultiCare
    Auburn Medical Center for further treatment.

Fire Investigations

  • There were no new calls for service for the Fire Investigation Unit.

C.A.R.E.S.

  • 0 responses (CARES out of service last week due to staffing)
  • 11 referrals
  • 3 new enrollments
  • 6 enrollments closed
  • 58 total patients enrolled

The Community Assistance, Referrals, and Education Services (CARES) is a joint program between VRFA,  King County Emergency Medical Services division South King Fire & Rescue, Enumclaw, and Mountainview Fire and Rescue departments. Each CARES response vehicle is staffed 8 a.m. – 7 p.m. by one firefighter from each department and a social worker. The CARES unit is sent on less emergent calls in non-transport capable vehicles to provide basic patient evaluation, assistance, specific basic life support treatment on scene, and arrange for transport if medically necessary. CARES also referred patients to community services where needed.
