VRFA Blotter: January 12-17, 2021

The Valley Regional Fire Authority responded to 267 calls for service for the week of January 11-17, 2021. Year to Date our Valley Professional Firefighters have responded to a total of 624 calls.  This is a 3.1% increase from 2020 (605).

Call Breakdown:

190 (71%) were aid calls. Total aid calls in 2021 so far are 278 (-.4% compared to 2020’s 471).

6 (2%) were fire calls. The number of fire calls is up by 114.5%, with 2021 having 15calls and 2020 having 7.

71 (27%) were calls categorized as other. The number of other calls is down (10.2%), with 2021 currently at 140 calls compared to 2020’s 127. Other calls include water rescues, HazMat calls, and ladder requests.

COVID-19 Testing Site

Specially trained VRFA EMTs assisted the King County Health Department in COVID-19 testing drive-up and walk-up residents at the GSA facility. We do not have a positivity rate this week for the C St Test Site.

The positivity rate of the C St SE testing site and the City of Auburn’s positivity rate (30.4% for the past 14 days) are two different things. The C St SE testing site does not impact the positivity rate of the City of Auburn.

Calls for Service

  • Motor Vehicle Accident: (Auburn) On Monday, January 11 at 1:47 p.m., firefighters responded to a 2 car accident on A St SE. One female was treated for leg pain and transported to MultiCare Auburn Medical Center by Aid 331.
  • Aid Call: (Auburn) On Tuesday, January 12 at 6:08 p.m., firefighters responded to an unconscious, unresponsive 35-year-old female. On arrival crews determined that the patient had been deceased too long to begin resuscitation efforts. The patient was declared dead at the scene and the scene
    was turned over to Auburn PD.
  • Aid Call: (Lea Hill) On Tuesday, January 12 at 4:21 p.m., firefighters responded to a middle aged male, who was Covid positive and experiencing difficulty breathing. The patient was treated at the scene by firefighters and transported by private ambulance to MultiCare Auburn Medical Center.
  • Residential Fire: (Kent) On Wednesday, January 13 at 9:07 a.m., firefighters responded on an automatic aid call with PSRFA for a mobile home fire. Firefighters provided exposure protection
    and assisted with overhaul of the structure.
  • Aid Call: (Auburn) On Thursday, January 14 at 9:03 a.m., firefighters assisted a male patient who had fallen at his workplace. The patient was transported to MultiCare Auburn Urgent Care by his father.
  • Dumpster Fire: (Auburn) On Friday, January 15 at 12:25 a.m., firefighters were dispatched to a dumpster fire. Firefighters arrived and found smoke and flames from a dumpster with no exposure issues. A hose line was quickly deployed and the fire was extinguished. The cause of the fire was undetermined.
  • Commercial Fire: (Auburn) On Friday, January 15 at 8:07 p.m., firefighters responded to an apartment fire at the 1200 block of Auburn Way South. When firefighters arrived, they found flames coming from the second floor apartments. There were also reports of a possible person trapped inside the structure. After further investigation, those reports were proven to be false and all residents were out or the structure. This Commercial fire went to two alarms with multiple fire units from VRFA, Puget Sound Regional Fire Authority and South King Fire & Rescue assisting with fighting the fire from inside the structure and the roof before finally extinguishing it. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the VRFA Fire Marshal’s Office.
  • Aid Call: (Algona) On Saturday, January 16, at 8:27 a.m. firefighters responded to reports of an elderly female possibly having a stroke. VRFA personnel evaluated the patient who was then transported to MultiCare Auburn Medical Center by private ambulance.
  • Aid Call: (Lea Hill) On Sunday, January 17 at 10:01 a.m., firefighters responded to a report of injuries due to domestic violence. Firefighters found a middle-aged man with a  laceration on his elbow. The patient declined to go to the hospital. He was given a sterile wound dressing by firefighters. There was no transport.

Fire Investigations:

On Friday, January 15, an accidental fire occurred in the 1200 block of H ST SE in the City of Auburn. The fire was the result of a  malfunctioning cigarette lighter, which spread to nearby
bedding and was accelerated by butane. Ten occupants were displaced and the Commercial/Taxpayer apartment building is considered a total loss. Estimated dollar loss is at $1,000,000 for the structure and $300,000 for contents.

The Community Assistance, Referrals, and Education Services (CARES) is a joint program between VRFA,  King County Emergency Medical Services division South King Fire & Rescue, Enumclaw, and Mountainview Fire and Rescue departments. Each CARES response vehicle is staffed 8 a.m. – 7 p.m. by one firefighter from each department and a social worker. The CARES unit is sent on less emergent calls in non-transport capable vehicles to provide basic patient evaluation, assistance, specific basic life support treatment on scene, and arrange for transport if medically necessary. CARES also referred patients to community services where needed.
