Significant road closures are set to begin Monday, June 2, 2025, in downtown Auburn as part of a major infrastructure improvement project aimed at revitalizing the city’s core and preparing it for future development.

The closures will affect East Main Street between Auburn Avenue and B Street NE, and Auburn Avenue between East Main Street and 1st Street NE. These sections will remain fully closed through the end of August, according to city officials.

Despite the closures, all downtown businesses and residences will remain open and accessible. The City of Auburn has implemented dedicated parking and wayfinding signage to guide pedestrians and drivers to nearby destinations.

“We know these closures will impact daily routines, but this project represents an important step toward revitalizing downtown Auburn for generations to come,” said Matt Larson, City of Auburn Senior Project Engineer. “Our priority is to keep downtown active and minimize inconveniences to residents and businesses during construction.”

The project includes upgrading underground water, sewer, and stormwater utilities, reconstructing sidewalks and roadways, installing new street lighting, and replacing the traffic signal at East Main Street and Auburn Avenue. An enhanced pedestrian crossing will also be added to improve safety and walkability in the area.

Construction crews began preliminary utility work in mid-May, which included demolition of a vacant building at 125 E Main Street. The project also lays the groundwork for future development, including a performing arts theater that is currently in the design phase.

Work will take place from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily, with no night work currently scheduled. If overnight construction becomes necessary, the city will notify affected residents and businesses in advance.
