A buddy bench is a simple concept. A park bench placed on a playground to help eliminate loneliness. When a child feels the need for a friend to talk to, they can signal this by sitting on the buddy bench. Other children, or staff, who see this will know this child needs a buddy to lend some help, support or comfort. For the Lea Hill Elementary PTA Board, a buddy bench is a perfect way to honor teacher, Sarah Greene.
“As the PTA board, we were really looking into something that would showcase her kindness and inclusiveness of all students. We thought a buddy bench that allows and helps kids to include everyone would be the perfect tribute to her memory,” said Crystal Canfield.
Greene passed away unexpectedly March 30th at the age of 34. She had been a teacher at Lea Hill Elementary for a little over four years. Greene’s classroom was a combined first and second-grade class. The GoFundMe started to help support her husband and daughters remembers Greene as “a beautiful wife, mother, daughter, sister, and friend. Not only did Sarah leave behind adoring family and friends, but she also leaves behind students she greatly impacted.”
Fundraising for Friendship
To install the bench, the Lea Hill Elementary PTA Board hopes to raise $1800. An event was held April 4th at Red Robin to help raise funds for the buddy bench. Diners raised $306. Additional contributions, including very generous donations from neighboring schools Lakeview and Hazelwood, have raised nearly $1000.
