Incident Summary (as of January 4, 2021): On Thursday, December 17, 2020, at approximately 8:16 pm Auburn police officers responded to a 911 call related to a disabled blocking vehicle in the 300 Block of T St SE in Auburn, WA.  A male associated with the blocking vehicle was identified as Nicholas Ellingson. Ellingson was confirmed to have two warrants out of Bothell, WA.

According to press releases, Ellingson fled on foot when officers attempted to detain him. “Auburn PD personnel followed the subject in a brief foot pursuit during which the subject displayed what appeared to be a firearm. During the foot pursuit, an Auburn officer fired his duty weapon striking the subject.”

Immediate medical aid was rendered to Ellingson by officers. Valley Regional Fire Authority personnel provided additional medical aid, but Ellingson died at the scene.

The Auburn Police Department issued an initial press release with limited information shortly before midnight on December 17, 2020.

Investigation:  The investigation into this fatal shooting by an officer will be handled by the Valley Independent Investigative Team (VIIT).  Tukwila Police Department is the lead agency for the investigation.

Per the VIIT press release, “VIIT is a multi-agency team made up of investigators from seven south King County Police Departments (Auburn, Des Moines, Federal Way, Kent, Renton, Port of Seattle, and Tukwila). With Auburn PD as the involved agency, their staff have been excluded from this VIIT investigation.”
