Below are just a few of the calls the Valley Regional Fire Authority responded to for the week of August 24-30, 2020. VRFA firefighters responded to a total of 260 calls for service during this week. 191 were aid calls, 14 were fire calls, and 55 were categorized as other. Other calls include water rescues, HazMat calls, and ladder requests.
Year to Date our Valley Professional Firefighters have responded to a total of 8,530 calls. This is a 3.1% decrease from 2019 (8,805 calls). Total aid calls in 2020 so far are 6,333 (-3.4% compared to 2019’s 6,555). The number of fire calls is down by 11.6%, with 2020 having 274 calls and 2019 having 310. The number of other calls is also down (0.9%), with 2020 currently at 1,923 calls compared to 2019’s 1,940.
VRFA’s Captain and firefighter that deployed to Spokane County have safely returned. Four of VRFA’s firefighters remain deployed to the LNU Incident in Calistoga (in Napa County) California.
911 Calls for Service:
- Accident: (Lakeland Hills) On Monday, August 24 at 8:48 p.m., firefighters responded to a bicyclist
who was stuck by a vehicle. The adult male’s injuries were evaluated on scene by firefighters. It
was determined that the patient’s injuries did not require additional immediate medical attention. - Rescue: (Mutual Aid with Enumclaw Fire) On Tuesday, August 25 at 17:32 p.m. technical rescue.
Firefighters from the VRFA, along with several other south King County fire departments, were
dispatched to a rescue call in the Green River Gorge. Firefighters recovered the body of a young
adult male who had fallen into the river and perished. The scene was then turned over to King
County Sheriff’s deputies for investigation into the cause of the accident. - Apartment Fire: (Federal Way) On Wednesday, August 26, at 3:59 p.m., a VRFA unit provided
assistance at an apartment fire in the 100 block of South 339th in Federal Way. SKFR firefighters
arrived to find heavy smoke from the eves of the two-story apartment building. Firefighters attacked
the fire from the inside attempting to extinguish the fire. All four units were destroyed and all families in the building are displaced. The cause of the fire is under investigation. No injuries were sustained. - CPR: (Auburn) On Thursday, August 27 at 5:30 p.m., firefighters and King County Medic One
personnel were dispatched to Emerald Downs Racetrack for a CPR in progress. Personnel
arrived to find an elderly male unconscious and not responding with CPR being done by
racetrack EMT’s. VRFA personnel and Medic 6 continued CPR on the patient and shocked once.
He regained a pulse and was transported by King County Medics to Valley Medical Center. - Motor Vehicle Accident (Auburn) on Friday, August 28 at 6:45 a.m. firefighters responded to a
motor vehicle accident on West Valley Highway at the end of Knickerbocker Drive. There were
reports of a single-car down an embankment with one patient rolling around beside the vehicle.
The car was said to have been traveling westbound on Knickerbocker at a high rate of speed,
missed the corner at the base of the hill, and rolled several times. It came to rest approximately 40
feet down the embankment. Firefighters on scene found two patients – one male that had been
ejected, and one female still in the vehicle. VRFA personnel and King County Medic One treated
the male patient and he was flown by Airlift Northwest to Harborview Medical Center for further
evaluation. The female passenger was also treated and transported to MultiCare Auburn Medical
Center by private ambulance. - Car Fire: (Auburn) On Saturday, August 29 at 1:12 p.m., firefighters were called to a passenger
vehicle fully engulfed. Firefighters arrived to find an abandoned vehicle fully involved with fire.
Firefighters extinguished the fire and released the scene to King County Sherriff’s Office for further
investigation. - Fall: (Lea Hill) On Sunday, August 30 at 1:13 p.m., firefighters were dispatched to a two-year-old
who had fallen from a window of his third-floor apartment. The child was found to have multiple
injuries and was treated at the scene by firefighters and King County Medics. The child was flown
to Harborview by Airlift Northwest.
Fire Investigations:
Investigators responded to a kitchen fire at an apartment complex on Lea Hill, in the City of
Auburn on the evening of August 31st. Investigation of the scene concluded that grease build-up
on the appliance ignited while other food was being prepared. Sprinkler activation in the affected
unit contained the fire until VRFA personnel could fully extinguish and overhaul the scene.
Residents were first alerted to the fire by residential smoke detectors. Damage was estimated
at approximately $10,000 dollars and one family was displaced. The VRFA assisted the family
in finding suitable accommodations.
