Officer-involved fatal shooting under investigation in Auburn

The Valley Independent Investigative Team (VIIT) is investigating an officer-involved fatal shooting that occurred on Friday, May 24, 2024, at 24 Auburn Way S. (map below).

Police said that at approximately 11 a.m., deputies from the King County Sheriff’s SWAT Team and Auburn Police officers responded to the location to serve a high-risk civil eviction order. Shortly after arriving, deputies made contact with the subject, which led to the use of deadly force.

Despite the efforts of first responders, the subject was pronounced dead at the scene. No officers were injured during the incident.

Six deputies involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave.

Detectives from VIIT are actively investigating the incident, with the Des Moines Police Department serving as the lead agency.

VIIT is a multi-agency team comprising investigators from seven South King County police departments: Auburn, Des Moines, Federal Way, Kent, Renton, Port of Seattle, and Tukwila. Due to the involvement of the King County Sheriff’s Office and Auburn Police in the incident, their departments are excluded from the investigation.

In accordance with Chapter 139-12 WAC, information regarding any officer-involved shooting cannot be released by the independent investigation team without first notifying the non-law enforcement community representative assigned to the investigation and the family liaison of the involved subject.
