At the regularly scheduled Feb. 8 School Board Meeting the Auburn School District Board of Directors recognized Carly Foster as February’s Outstanding Staff Member of the Month and Oscar Contreras as the Outstanding Student of the Month. Foster is a teacher at Gildo Rey Elementary, and Contreras is a fifth-grade student at Alpac Elementary.
Carly Foster – Outstanding Staff Member of the Month
Foster has taught in ASD for seven years. An ASD student herself, Foster attended Dick Scobee Elementary School, Rainier Middle School, and Auburn High School before getting her BA in early childhood education, and her masters in curriculum and instruction.
While she has taught kindergarten, fourth, and fifth grade, her passion is teaching kindergarten.
“I love kindergarten students,” Foster said. “I love how much they love everybody else and how honest, genuine, and blunt they are. I love seeing students learn their love for learning.”
Foster’s colleague Keri Weygint said Foster was born to teach kindergarten.
“She sings, she smiles, she dances, she wears dresses that match the day, she has class parties,” Weygint said. “She spends her free time thinking and preparing for her students and their families.”
When Foster isn’t working she enjoys home projects, crafts, hiking, working out, and anything dog-related. She lives near Lake View with her husband of three years, Stephen. Foster and her husband love the Mariners and got engaged and took their engagement photos at T-Mobile field.
Oscar Contreras – Outstanding Student of the Month
Contreras is bilingual in Spanish and English, and enjoys helping those who are learning Spanish, along with Spanish speakers who are learning English, he said.
Contreras’ teacher, Haewon Park, said “Oscar is a hard-working, responsible and respectful student.” He leads class discussions and help his peers when they are confused.
Another teacher, Holly Lancaster, said “He is always contributing in a positive way during leadership lab, even when it might not seem like the popular thing to do.”
His favorite subject is math and he enjoys how it connects with games he plays with his family, such as using angles to make pool shots. In addition to school, Oscar loves to do archery, play soccer, ride his longboard, and play with his little brother.
Contreras hopes to become a football quarterback, or a forward or goalie for his favorite soccer team, FC Barcelona. He is also interested in being an auto mechanic after his sports career, because he’s fascinated by how cars work.
Congratulations Oscar and Carly!
