VRFA Fire Blotter: December 7-13, 2020

The Valley Regional Fire Authority responded to 257 calls for service for the week December 7-13, 2020. Year to Date our Valley Professional Firefighters have responded to a total of 12,472 calls.  This is a .10% decrease from 2019 (12,461calls).

Call Breakdown:

190 (74%) were aid calls. Total aid calls in 2020 so far are 9,197  (-0.6% compared to 2019’s 9,254).

12 (5%) were fire calls. The number of fire calls is up by 8.4%, with 2020 having 428 calls and 2019 having 395.

55 (21%) were calls categorized as other. The number of other calls is also up (1.2%), with 2020 currently at 2,847 calls compared to 2019’s 2,812. Other calls include water rescues, HazMat calls, and ladder requests.

This weekend our firefighters will be providing toys to 900 families from Auburn, Algona, and Pacific. The annual Toys for Kids event is a partnership between the Valley Professional Firefighters – IAFF 1352 and the Auburn Foodbank.

COVID-19 Testing Site

Specially trained VRFA EMTs assisted the King County Health Department in COVID-19 testing drive-up and walk-up residents at the GSA facility. This site administered approximately 5,000 tests between December 1 and December 13, 2020. 17.5% were positive.

The positivity rate of the C St SE testing site and the City of Auburn’s positivity rate (25.5%) are two different things. The C St SE testing site does not impact the positivity rate of the City of Auburn.

Calls for Service:

  • Aid Call: (Lea Hill) On Monday, December 7 at 2:48 p.m., firefighters assisted a middle age female with leg edema. The patient was treated and transported to Covington  MultiCare by private ambulance.
  • Shooting: (Auburn) On Tuesday, December 8 at 8:30 p.m., firefighters responded to an early 20’s male with a gunshot wound to the lower leg. The patient was evaluated and treated by paramedics then transported to Valley Medical Center by private ambulance.
  • Aid Call: (Auburn) On Tuesday, December 8 at 1:08 p.m., firefighters responded with Auburn Police to an altercation at an apartment complex. A police officer suffered minor injuries while taking one of the involved persons into custody. The officer was evaluated by firefighters and transported by police officers to MultiCare Auburn Medical Center for further care.

  • Commercial Fire: (Auburn) On Wednesday, December 9, at 11:11 a.m., firefighters responded to a reported commercial fire at a strip mall located along East Main Street. Firefighters arrived quickly and aggressively attacked the fire. A Second alarm was called for more resources, including mutual aid units from Puget Sound RFA and South King Fire and Rescue. Multiple businesses were damaged. No civilian(s) or firefighter(s) were injured during the incident. The cause of the fire was determined to be accidental by the VRFA Fire Marshalls office.
  • Kitchen Fire: (Lea Hill) On Thursday, December 10 at 6:58 p.m., firefighters responded to reported kitchen fire at Promenade apartments. Arriving crews found a stove fire, which was extinguished by the sprinkler system. Crews removed water from apartment unit. Cause of the fire is under investigation.
  • Aid Call: (Auburn) On Friday, December 11 at 2:50 p.m., firefighters responded to an adult male complaining of pain in both legs after being pinned under a slab of granite weighing approximately 1000 lbs. The patient was assessed and transported to a local hospital by fire department aid car.
  • Vehicle Fire: (South Auburn) On Saturday, December 12 at 11:17 a.m., firefighters responded to a report of smoke coming from a parked van. Firefighters investigated and found a smoldering fire inside the passenger compartment, which they extinguished. APD was requested to determine the vehicle owner. The van was a total loss.
  • Aid Call: (Lakeland Hills) On Sunday, December 13 at 10:27 a.m., firefighters responded to a report of an adult female in respiratory distress. Arriving on location, firefighters found the patient not breathing and in cardiac arrest. Firefighters and King County Medics performed CPR and the patient was transported to MultiCare Auburn Medical Center by medics.

Fire Investigation:

On Wednesday, December 9, an accidental fire occurred in the 900 block of East Main Street in
the City of Auburn. The fire occurred in a commercial strip mall as a result of a failed electrical
component in outdoor lighting. The fire was confined in the roof structure with minimal damage
to business spaces. Dollar loss is estimated at $250,000.

The Community Assistance, Referrals, and Education Services (CARES) is a joint program between VRFA,  King County Emergency Medical Services division South King Fire & Rescue, Enumclaw, and Mountainview Fire and Rescue departments. Each CARES response vehicle is staffed 8 a.m. – 7 p.m. by one firefighter from each department and a social worker. The CARES unit is sent on less emergent calls in non-transport capable vehicles to provide basic patient evaluation, assistance, specific basic life support treatment on scene, and arrange for transport if medically necessary. CARES also referred patients to community services where needed.
