April is Fair Housing Month and on April 1st the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) launched the “Call HUD: Because Sexual Harassment in Housing is Illegal” campaign to bring more awareness to sexual harassment in housing, to encourage people to report sexual harassment, and to help protect people from sexual harassment by landlords, property managers, and maintenance workers in HUD-assisted housing. In addition, HUD promotes the Fair Housing Act and encourages communities to recommit to eliminating housing discrimination. In 2018 there was over 8,000 complaints made to HUD and partner agencies alleging housing discrimination. To learn more about fair housing, see “The Basics of the Fair Housing Act” produced by HUD’s Office of Fair Housing & Equal Opportunity.
