Assistant Fire Chief Christian Johnson, 55, was badly burned while fighting the Spring Coulee Fire in Eastern Washington last month. He was flown to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. He spent the last month in intensive care for treatment of burns that nearly 60% of his body.
Johnson was in a truck with another firefighter when flames overtook them. The other firefighter outran the fire, but came back, treated Johnson and called for help.
Johnson died, Wednesday Octoner 2, 2019 surrounded by his wife Pam, family and friends. A celebration of life service will be held on Thursday, October 24, at 1:00 pm, at the Okanogan County Fairgrounds Agriplex.
Johnson, a volunteer assistant chief with Okanogan County Fire District 3.
Governor Inslee’s proclamation reads:
Governor Inslee is deeply saddened by the death of Christian Johnson, Assistant Fire Chief for Okanogan County Fire District #3, and directs that Washington State and United States flags at all state agency facilities be lowered to half-staff in his memory on Thursday, October 24, 2019. Assistant Fire Chief Johnson, 55, passed away on October 2, 2019, from injuries sustained in the Spring Coulee Fire, south of Okanogan.
Flags should remain at half-staff until close of business or sunset on Thursday, October 24, 2019.
