With the rising cost of tuition, finding and applying for scholarships has become a routine part of a high school senior’s college application process. Seniors in Auburn are no different. See Ya Later’s Scott Banke Memorial Scholarship Fund is one of several scholarship opportunities available to Auburn seniors.
To date, See Ya Later Washington has granted 25 scholarships, for a total of $36,500. These scholarships have been awarded to a mix of students from Auburn High, Auburn Riverside, and Auburn Mountainview High School. “We started out offering two scholarships in 2012 for $1,000. Based on community support we have increased that number to six scholarships worth $1,500 each,” said See Ya Later Board member Brian Williams.
“This program is important to See Ya Later so that we can always remember the impact that Scott Banke had on his community,” Williams continued. “We want other kids to honor Scott and be blessed by his legacy. We are proud to meet these impact makers and send them off to college, and life, with assistance from the Scott Banke Memorial Scholarship Fund so that they will be inspired to help youth and encourage families in their daily journey.”
Promoting Positive Impact in our Communities and World
The Scott Banke Memorial Scholarship Fund is open to graduating seniors attending Auburn High School, Auburn Riverside High School, Auburn Mountainview High School, and West Auburn High School. Graduating seniors residing in Auburn attending any other public or private accredited high school in Auburn (including home school) are also eligible.
Auburn seniors wanting to apply for the scholarship should follow the application criteria outlined on the See Ya Later website. Here are the basic requirements:
- Submit an online application
- Email only one Letter of Recommendation to [email protected]
- Students must submit/email a Community Service Timeline to [email protected]
“Each year we receive between 40-60 completed applications, that must include letters of reference as well as a community service timeline. The applications are narrowed down to the top 12 students based on a review by our scholarship committee. The top 12 are then scheduled for an interview with that same committee, and the interview is scored, along with the written application to determine the finalists,” explained Williams.
Applications due by April 19th
Williams also shared pointers for those applying, “don’t short cut anything. Fill out a complete application. Sell yourself. Tell the committee about what you have done and what you want to do. We want to know how you are making an impact in the community and how you will continue to do so in the future.”
Students attending technical or Trade schools are eligible for the Scott Banke Memorial Scholarship Fund. All awarded students must be enrolled, with a student ID number before funds being issued. Scholarship funds are issued directly to the awarded student’s school.
SYL Annual Team Trivia Challenge
The funding for the Scott Banke Memorial Scholarship Fund is raised at See Ya Later Washington’s annual Team Trivia Challenge. This year’s event is being held on March 27, 2019. On the See Ya Later website, the event is described as “a hosted game played with teams of 4-8. Teams work together to decide on their answer as well as strategize the optimal use of the point values. Join us for a night of food, fun, and trivia as we raise funds for the Scott Banke Memorial Scholarship Fund. There will be a silent raffle and a dessert dash as well. Space is limited to 120 players.”
The event is “$40 per person. [This] includes admission to the event and dinner catered by Bogey’s. We will also host a dessert dash. The table that donates the most cash gets the first choice of desserts. The dash will continue until all the desserts are claimed. No-host bar.
