This spring, the coronavirus pandemic led to the biggest unemployment spike in U.S. history. Even before COVID-19, 12% of King County adults experienced food insecurity. According to a King County report, “research has estimated that for every 1 percentage-point increase in the unemployment rate, there is 0.52 percentage-point increase in the food insecurity rate.”

The same King County report shares that “higher food insecurity is experienced by adults between the ages of 25-44, adults in households with children, Hispanic adults, low-income adults, and adults living in South King County.”

To help support families and individuals facing uncertainty and food insecurities, local organizations and members of the faith community have regularly scheduled grocery giveaways. This support is in addition to the Auburn Food Bank, a staple resource in the community.
