AMHS Student Taken into Custody for Bringing BB Gun to School

An Auburn Mountainview High School student informed administrators that a fellow student had a firearm. The freshman was located with the weapon, a BB gun, and was taken into custody. No one was injured.

According to Auburn Police Commander Dan O’Neil, the student alerted administrators to the weapon after it was shown to them.  In a letter sent home to AMHS parents, Principal Terri Herren explained that “in cooperation with our School Resource Officer, we began an immediate investigation. Our school administrators and [School Resource Officer] questioned the student and all involved.”

Once the weapon was seized by the School Resource Officer, a fully commissioned Auburn police officer, it was determined to be a BB gun.  “The student did not provide an explanation as to why they brought the gun to school,” said O’Neil.

The school was not put on lockdown and the incident was never considered an active shooter situation.   The student has been taken into custody. At this time they have not been charged with a crime.

A school shooting today in Southern California that left two dead and three wounded is a tragic reminder of the seriousness of today’s incident. “School safety is a top priority for the Auburn Police Department,” said O’Neil. “Anytime there is a mention of a weapon at a school we want to be vigilant in our efforts to investigate it.”

Recognizing the need for timely and accurate information about student safety, I want to share with you an incident that occurred today.

Today, a student was arrested and taken into custody for bringing a BB gun to school.

This morning a tip was provided to administrators that a student may be in possession of a gun.  In cooperation with our School Resource Officer, we began an immediate investigation. As with all matters of student safety, we took this very seriously and acted accordingly.

This is a great reminder to all students and families that if they see something, they should say something.

Sincerely,
Terri Herren
Principal
