Two Auburn police officers have been awarded the department’s Medal of Life-Saving after their quick actions helped revive an 84-year-old man who collapsed at a home earlier this month.

On Aug. 4, Officers Nelson and Bernabe were dispatched to the 11000 block of SE 290th Place for a report of CPR in progress. The man was unconscious, not breathing, and had no pulse when officers arrived.

According to the department, Officer Nelson ran down a long driveway carrying an AED while Officer Bernabe began chest compressions. The two worked together to apply the AED pads, which determined no shock was needed, and compressions continued.

Puget Sound Regional Fire Authority crews and King County Medic One soon arrived and took over medical care. By 11:44 a.m., the man had been revived and his pulse had returned, officials said. He was later transported to a medical facility.

“Without your quick response, ability to remain calm, and training, it is unlikely the patient would have survived,” Auburn Police Chief Mark Caillier wrote in commendations presented to both officers. “You displayed great professionalism and competence during this incident. Therefore, you are awarded the Auburn Police Department Lifesaving Medal.”

PSRFA Captain Erickson also praised the officers, noting that their early CPR “primed the heart” and allowed medics to help the man regain a stable rhythm.
