The department reported receiving multiple 911 calls on Thursday about the scam, which appears to be targeting residents throughout the area.

“This is a scam. Law enforcement will NEVER call you to request payment over the phone,” police said in a statement. “This scam is actively happening right now as we post.”

Residents are advised to avoid making payments via gift cards, wire transfers, or cryptocurrency, as these are common methods used by scammers.

Anyone who receives such a call is urged to contact local law enforcement and report the incident.
