At around 9:30 p.m. that night, Officers Bentz, Nguyen, and Kemp responded to the Multicare Auburn Medical Center for the reported theft of a black 2021 Toyota Highlander. Officer Bentz developed probable cause and initiated a search for the vehicle, utilizing both the victim’s stolen phone and the car’s GPS.

The stolen vehicle was tracked to a Metro Park and Ride on Pacific Highway and later to the Silver Shadow apartments. Auburn PD had already requested assistance from Federal Way and Officers Nguyen, Kemp, and Shanks responded to the location to take custody of any suspects and recover the vehicle.

At approximately 10:15 p.m., Officer Nguyen observed the stolen vehicle exiting the apartments and immediately initiated a pursuit. The suspect vehicle struck Officer Kemp’s patrol car before fleeing across Pacific Highway into the Dutch Brothers Coffee parking lot. Three suspects abandoned the vehicle and attempted to flee on foot; two were apprehended.

The victim positively identified both suspects, and a handgun was recovered from the vehicle. Both suspects, ages 17 and 23, were booked into jail.
