From Auburn Police Department: Starting Sunday, March 11th and running until March 24th, members of the Auburn Police Department will be working emphasis patrols as part of our Target Zero “Five to Stay Alive” traffic safety plan. These patrols focus on driving behaviors that we frequently see in collision statistics such as cell phone use, impairment, seat belt use, speeding and pedestrian awareness.
According to NHTSA, nationally in 2015, 3,477 people were killed from collisions where distracted driving was listed as a factor and an additional 391,000+ people were injured.
Since passing the new distracted driving law last July, our officers report seeing a lot fewer drivers using their cell phones in an obvious manner but also report seeing a lot of drivers looking down at their laps and at the center consoles of their cars a lot more. Does anyone wonder what they may be looking at?
Please put the phone away. On the road means off the phone.
