All U.S. Flags to be Flown at Half-Staff to Honor SPD Officer Lexi Harris

Governor Jay Inslee has issued a directive that all U.S. and Washington are to fly at half-staff Thursday, July 1, 2021, in honor of SPD officer Alexandra Brenneman Harris.

“Police Officer Lexi Harris was struck and killed by a vehicle while checking on the welfare of several drivers who had just been involved in a vehicle crash on I-5 near Spokane Street,” states the Officer Down Memorial Page for Harris.

“Officer Harris had just completed her shift and was en route home when she encountered the crash at about 1:15 am,” continued Harris’ entry. “She had exited her vehicle to check on the drivers when she was struck by another passing vehicle.” The driver who struck Harris remained on the scene and has been cooperative with investigators.

Inslee’s directive includes the following statement:

“I am deeply saddened by the death of Seattle Police Officer Alexandra Brenneman Harris, 38,
and direct that Washington State and United States flags at all state agency facilities be lowered
to half-staff in her memory on Thursday, July 1, 2021. Officer Harris died in the line of duty on
Sunday, June 13, 2021.”

*As a reminder, when the U.S. flag is flown at half-staff or half-mast, it should first be raised to the top for an instant, then immediately lowered to the half-staff or half-mast position. Prior to lowering the flag, it should be raised once more to the peak, then lowered.

The Auburn Examiner does not name mass shooters unless there is an immediate threat to public safety.
