The Auburn Symphony Orchestra kicked off their season Sunday, October 13th with a riveting performance of “Pictures at an Exhibition.” This unique concert was paired with Adrian Wyard’s animations.  In addition to the remarkable music and visual arts of the concert, the Auburn Symphony Orchestra hosted artwork in the lobby, created by students from two Auburn School District elementary schools.

The concert started out with a powerful piece with strong steady tones and harmonies that blended beautifully. The piece sparked an emotion of wonder and fascination. It was truly outstanding.

Then the performance really began as the Orchestra played pieces that matched the visuals projected perfectly with the music.  Mussorgsky’s “Ballet of the Unhatched Chicks” was a happy piece that evoked joy and humor to the audience with the visuals of little unhatched chicks running around with their legs poking through the shell, them dancing across the screen.

Mussorgsky’s “The Gnome” brought a sense of mystery to the audience.  Wyard’s visuals of three little gnome creatures creeping around trying to steal a family’s prized necklace added to the thrill of the music; especially when the three gnomes got away with the necklace.

In between each piece was a jaunty piece that presented the feeling of honor and dignity to the audience. The Orchestra went through all of their parts, bringing about an array of emotions to the audience.  This was helped significantly by the presentation of visuals.

Students from Pioneer Elementary School and Arthur Jacobson Elementary School worked with the Interurban Center for the Arts to create art inspired by Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition.  Three students won an award for their artwork.  Jasmin of Pioneer Elementary won Conductor’s Choice.  Hasain won Best of Arthur Jacobsen. Naima won Best of Pioneer Elementary.
