For over 65 years firefighters across the nation have participated in the Fill the Boot program. This annual event raises millions of dollars each year to help “give Muscular Dystrophy the boot.” Through the life of the program, more than $558 million has been raised to help save and improve the lives of those with muscle disease. This Friday, October 11th, Valley Professional Firefighters and South King County Firefighters are teaming up to Fill the Boot to support local families fighting muscle disease.
“With MDA, the IAFF’s support is not going to come to an end until the need for MDA doesn’t exist.” – Harold A. Schaitberger, IAFF General President
IAFF Local 1352 Valley Professional Fire Fighters will again be partnering with South King Professional Fire Fighters IAFF Local 2024 (Federal Way and Des Moines). “We have partnered with them for a few years now due to panhandling laws in their jurisdiction making it difficult to do this event,” shared Colton Fogelberg, member of the Valley Professional Fire Fighters, IAFF Local 1352.
All donations received go directly to the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA). None of the donations go toward funding for the firefighters, fire department or the local IAFF. Fogelberg confirmed a local MDA representative will be at the event with the firefighters and will collect the money that day.
“Our local enjoys participating in this event. As firefighters, we are always trying to make a difference and this money goes to a great cause,” said Fogelberg. “In addition to going to research, some of the money goes to support a summer camp experience for kids with muscular dystrophy. There is a “firefighter day” and some of our members have gone up to help and participate in activities with the campers. It is awesome to go out there and see how happy these kids are at summer camp. It is among the highlights of the year for a lot of these kids.”
This Friday’s event will run from about 9:00am to 4:00pm on the South side of the Outlet collection, along 15th St SW. The exact intersections firefighters will be stationed for collection will vary throughout the day, so have your money ready!
If you are unable to make it through for the Fill the Boot event, or don’t have any cash on hand, donations can be made directly to the MDA on MDA.org.
