Select Jif® Peanut Butter products have been voluntarily recalled by the J.M. Smucker Co., the company announced Friday. The nationwide recall is due to potential Salmonella contamination.
Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems,” states an announcement from the J.M. Smucker Co.

What Jif Peanut Butter Was Recalled?
The recalled peanut butter was distributed nationwide . “Recalled products include products with lot codes 1274425 – 2140425. Lot codes are included alongside best-if-used-by date,” J.M. Smucker Co. said in a company statement.

As of May 21, the CDC investigation reflects 14 people ill, from 12 states due to the outbreak strain of Salmonella related to the recall. One of the sick individuals is reported to be in Washington State. According to the CDC, reported illnesses range from February 17 through May 1, 2022.
“Sick people range in age from less than one to 85 years, with a median age of 56, and 71% are female,” said the CDC. “Of 6 people with information available, 2 have been hospitalized. No deaths have been reported.”
Again, the voluntarily recalled Jif® peanut butter products “have the lot code numbers between 1274425 – 2140425,” states the FDA website, “only if the first seven digits end with 425 (manufactured in Lexington, KY).”
What if You Have Recalled Jif Peanut Butter?
Peanut butter has a two year shelf life, so check your pantries for any unopened jars of Jif® that may be a part of the recall. Consumers, restaurants, and retailers should not eat, sell, or serve any recalled Jif peanut butter.
The FDA recommends that If you have used the recalled Jif peanut butter the FDA recommends washing and sanitizing all surfaces and utensils that could have touched the peanut butter. If you or someone in your household consumed the recalled peanut butter, monitor for potential symptoms of salmonellosis and contact your healthcare provider if any are observed.
According to the CDC “CDC, public health and regulatory officials in several states, and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) are collecting different types of data to investigate a multistate outbreak of Salmonella Senftenberg infections.”
