Below are just a few of the calls the Valley Regional Fire Authority responded to for the week of September 21-27, 2020. VRFA firefighters responded to a total of 258 calls for service during this week. 195 were aid calls, 8 were fire calls, and 55were categorized as other. Other calls include water rescues, HazMat calls, and ladder requests.
Year to Date our Valley Professional Firefighters have responded to a total of 9,709 calls. This is a .06% decrease from 2019 (9,772 calls). Total aid calls in 2020 so far are 7,135 (-1.6% compared to 2019’s 7,252). The number of fire calls is up by 2.1%, with 2020 having 338 calls and 2019 having 331. The number of other calls is also up (2.1%), with 2020 currently at 2,236 calls compared to 2019’s 2,189.
Wildland Team Update:
VRFA shared this morning that “our [Wildland] crew of a captain and two firefighters are still working hard at the August Complex Fire in California. Today they will be “mopping up” an area which includes extinguishing hot spots, removing burning material along or near the fire control line, felling snags and moving logs so they won’t roll downhill. This is all in anticipation of increased fire activity tomorrow.”

- Oven Fire: (Lakeland Hills) On Monday, September 21, at 4:07 p.m., firefighters responded to a report of an oven fire. On location, firefighters found an oven fire that had extended to the cabinets.A neighboring off-duty police officer had knocked the fire down using a garden hose. Firefighters quickly finished extinguished the fire and confirmed that there was no further fire extension.
- Car vs Bicyclist: (Auburn) On Tuesday, September 22, at 2:30 p.m., firefighters assisted an adult male complaining of back pain after being hit by a car while riding his bicycle. He was evaluated and then transported to a local hospital by private ambulance.
- Shooting: (Auburn) On Wednesday, September 23, at 2:53 a.m., VRFA firefighters and King
County paramedics responded to the 2200 block of Auburn Way North for a shooting. Firefighters arrived to find two patients. CPR was started on one of the patients while an evaluation of the second was conducted. Despite best efforts, CPR was stopped. The second patient was treated then transported to Harborview Medical Center by paramedics. - Vehicle Fire: (Auburn) On Thursday, September 24, at 6:25 p.m. firefighters, responded to a
commercial vehicle fire. They arrived to find a fully involved box truck in an open lot without any structural exposures. They pulled a hose line to extinguish the fire. The fire was contained to the box truck and did not damage any other vehicles. - Motor Vehicle Accident: (Auburn) On Friday, September 25, 2020 at 7:04 a.m., firefighters
responded to a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of 37th St NE and Auburn Way North. The collision blocked multiple northbound lanes with scattered debris and the damaged vehicles themselves. Both vehicles suffered significant damage to the front end and air bags were deployed in both vehicles. There were three patients involved in the collision and all had non-life threatening injuries. All patients were transported to MultiCare Auburn Medical Center by multiple VRFA aid units and private ambulance. - Shooting: (Auburn) On Friday, September 25, at 1:59 p.m., firefighters responded to a report of gunshots in an apartment complex. The crew arrived to find one adult male with multiple gunshot wounds to his back. VRFA personnel and King County Medic One treated the patient on scene. Medic 6 transported him to Harborview Medical Center for further evaluation.
- Vehicle Accident: (Lea Hill) On Saturday, September 26, at 11:20 a.m., firefighters responded to a vehicle accident. A middle age female driver lost control of her vehicle striking three large metal 3 fence posts and a tree after a bee flew into her vehicle. The driver suffered only a minor elbow injury caused by front and side airbags. The driver declined to be transported. Status of the bee is unknown. (That wasn’t us this time!)
- Aid Call: (Auburn) On Sunday, September 27, at 6:52 p.m., firefighters responded to a teenage boy with a rapid heart rate. Firefighters determined the patient was experiencing super ventricular tachycardia. Firefighters requested King County Medic, who converted the arrhythmia to a normal heart rhythm. The patient was transported to MultiCare Auburn Medical Center for follow-up.
Fire Investigations:
- On Sunday, September 22nd, a residential fire occurred in Lakeland Hills, in the City of Auburn. The fire destroyed the kitchen and dining room area of the home. The fire was determined to be accidental with an estimated loss of $30,000.
- On Monday, September 23rd, a commercial truck fire occurred at Emerald Downs, in the City of
Auburn. The fire destroyed a commercial vehicle, with an estimated loss of $25,000. The cause of the
fire is undetermined.
