What’s on the Ballot: State Auditor

With less than a week away from  Primary Election Day, it’s important you really hunker down and check over your ballot. Do you know where your ballot is?

As a mail-in ballot state (no stamp needed!), our ballots need to be turned in or postmarked by 8:00 pm on election day.  It is recommended to mail your ballot in by the Friday before the election.  A friendly reminder to our Auburn residents who live in Pierce County, your ballot drop boxes are located in Sumner and Bonney Lake. Avoid the last-minute rush on Tuesday and get your ballot in now!

State Auditor

A State Auditor supervises and has administrative rights over the accounting and financial functions of the state. Auditors also perform internal government audits and investigations of other state and local governmental agencies to ensure public funds are being used properly. Read more to learn what the WA State Auditor does.

This is a statewide position with a 4-year term.

WA State Auditor Candidates

Candidates submit their statements to the state for the voters’ guide. Neither the Office of the Secretary of State or Auburn Examiner make corrections or verify statements for truth or fact. A candidate’s preference does not imply that the candidate is nominated or endorsed by the party, or that the party approves of or associates with that candidate.

Statement
We deserve a leader with both management and technical expertise who can lead the agency to modernize the audit process. We deserve a leader who does not have deep political ties preventing him from maintaining independence and objectivity. We deserve a leader who understands and will implement industry best practices. Most importantly, we deserve a leader who knows how an auditor should lead before, during, and after a crisis. I am that leader.

In fast moving situations, leaders must understand their capabilities and be decisive. They must also have the professional knowledge and experience to justify their decisions. An early window appeared during the pandemic where quick and decisive leadership may have helped to identify some of the weak spots in government. For example, an audit of the state’s unemployment office may have identified deficiencies in preventing the estimated hundreds of millions in fraud. This was a missed opportunity to provide accountability. As a CPA and a proven leader who has routinely made these types of decisions, I have the experience to be the effective leader we need.

Washingtonians no longer need to choose between leadership and expertise. I will bring both to this office.

Community Service

Statement
The State Auditor’s Office deserves someone who will finally unlock its full potential to serve Washington. This position has a vital role in oversight of your public dollars, but it also has the power to perform auditing that can change the way government agencies spend that money more efficiently.

I am the candidate in this race that has the most hands on experience with government auditing and government process at the investigative level. I also have perspective on all types of Washington governments instead of those just within our major cities.

We need an auditor that combines all of this experience with a desire to bring lean business practices to the office and to make recommendations in Washington agencies that will create jobs and opportunities across all of our state. Wherever my department can find opportunities for us to spend money on products and materials made by Washington businesses, we will recommend these opportunities be prioritized by our state government.

This November, remember that your auditor should be less about their party and more about their boss: You.

Statement
I have had the honor of serving as the elected Washington State Auditor for the past four years. I am proud of being the first woman to hold this position. Prior to State Auditor, I served as Pierce County Executive and Pierce County Auditor. I have a proven and tested public record of leadership.

As State Auditor, it is a privilege to lead over 400 employees working across the state to provide fiscal and accountability audits of all local and state governments. We have increased the number of cybersecurity and performance audits, while conducting numerous investigations including uncovering the largest fraud on record.

My vision to “increase trust in government” means greater transparency and accountability of public money. To accomplish this goal, I have created a user-friendly, interactive website that gives you important information about each government that serves you. Having an independent, objective review of public dollars is the hallmark of my work at the State Auditor’s Office.

I have been endorsed by many people and organizations, which are listed at my website: www.patmccarthyauditor.com. I am seeking re-election to this important job and ask for your support.
