State Attorney General

“Attorneys general are the top legal officers of their state or territory,” states USA.gov. “They advise and represent their legislature and state agencies and act as the “People’s Lawyer” for the citizens. Most are elected, though a few are appointed by the governor. Select your state to connect to your state attorney general’s website.”

The Washington State Attorney General’s page clarifies that “State law prohibits the Attorney General, deputy attorneys general, and assistant attorneys general from engaging in the private practice of law. This means that they cannot represent private citizens in court either to bring an action on behalf of an individual or to defend an individual.”

It’s important not to confuse a State’s Attorney General with the US Attorney General.

Statement
I’m running to be your Attorney General because as a lifelong Washingtonian and father of four little kids, I believe that they deserve a better, safer Washington. Everyone agrees that the homeless situation in our cities has spiraled out of control, and no one is doing anything about it. This is unacceptable! For 8 years, homelessness, drug abuse, and crime have been on the rise. As Attorney General, I will make this a priority! I am dedicated to making sure law enforcement and first responders have the tools, training, and resources they need to do their job well.

As an owner of a 3rd generation manufacturing company, I understand the struggles that Washington businesses face every day, and I will fight to make Washington a more business friendly state. I’m proudly endorsed by a former Washington Attorney General, State Senators, State Legislators, County Sheriffs, First Responders, radio talk show hosts, business owners, community leaders, and many more elected officials from all over the state!

Thanks for your vote — it’s time to roll up our sleeves, get to work, and take back our streets and parks!

Statement
As the son of a World War II refugee, Mike understands what tough times are like. People are hurting. True leadership is rare. Decisions impacting our lives and livelihoods are guided by partisanship and not the rule of law. It’s time we changed that.

As your Attorney General, Mike Vaska will protect the Evergreen State, not advance a partisan agenda. He’s the only candidate with decades of legal experience, which he’ll use to improve public safety, protect consumers, and be an independent check on state power.

State government must take an all-hands approach to rebuilding our economy by supporting small businesses, farmers, and all workers. Mike will convene a “Create Jobs Now” task force to streamline permitting and reduce regulatory burdens. Mike will demand results to end our state’s homelessness and public safety crisis, bringing people together to find real solutions – not relying on the past’s failed policies.

Mike has earned bipartisan support from statewide leaders we trust like Governor Dan Evans, Attorney General Rob McKenna, former Congressmen Dave Reichert and Sid Morrison, and local leaders like Spokane County Commissioner Mary Kuney, Snohomish Council Chair Nate Nehring, and Vancouver business leader Ann Donnelly. Please join them with your vote.

Brett Rogers
(Prefers Republican Party)

Elected Experience
None.

Other Professional Experience
I have over 20 years of law enforcement experience with the Seattle Police Department and the Wisconsin Department of Revenue as a patrol officer, detective, and supervisor. I have supervised the work of SPD’s Domestic Violence & Elder Crimes Unit and the Audit, Policy & Research Section. I have a combined seven years experience conducting internal investigations for SPD and Seattle Public Schools.

Education
J.D. Seattle University School of Law

Community Service
Operated a solo law practice serving primarily reduced-rate and pro bono clients. Served as volunteer president and treasurer of my neighborhood’s homeowner’s association.

Statement
Olympia has become unresponsive to the people of our state: Tax increases during times of budget surplus, legislative votes in the dead of night, title-only and “ghost” bills. I want to represent the forgotten people of our state.

As attorney general I will focus on public safety, government accountability, and safeguarding all of our civil rights. During my law enforcement career I gained experience impartially enforcing the law at the street-level, researching and setting criminal justice policy, and supervising in a large government organization.

Personal and governmental accountability are passions of mine. Equal protection under the law means just that; the rules must be applied to everyone, equally. While conducting internal investigations in law enforcement and education settings I strove to ensure that all were treated fairly but were also accountable for their actions.

I recognize the role of government is to protect the rights of all individuals, that government derives its power from the consent of the governed, and that the government does not grant your inalienable rights. As attorney general I will represent you, the people of Washington and I will not compromise when it comes to protecting your civil rights.
