In October of every year, millions of children from countries around the world participate in Safe Kids Walk This Way events for International Walk to School Day.   On October 2nd Washington Elementary School students were joined Valley Regional Fire Authority, Auburn Police Department, Mayor Nancy Backus, Councilmember Yolanda Trout-Manuel, Auburn School District Superintendent Dr. Alan Spicciati, and Clifford the Big Red Dog to help raise awareness about walking safety and promote healthy behavior.

“The Walk to School event was a great opportunity to bring the community together and promote safe walking practices. I always enjoy the opportunity to spend time with students,” said Spicciati.

Students who participated were given  “a “swag bag” with pedestrian safety tips, a LED light to attach to their backpack or clothing, a reflective bracelet, Clifford Takes A Walk (Scholastic) book, and stickers from Safe Kids and Valley Regional Fire Authority,” shared Kimberly Terhune, VRFA Public Information & Education Officer.

“All students in the school will also receive the LED lights to attach to their backpacks and pedestrian safety tips. The goal is to increase pedestrian safety, prevent potential injuries from car versus pedestrian type incidents and promote healthy behavior,” said Terhune.

Since 1999, Safe Kids Walk This Way and FedEx have teamed together to celebrate International Walk to School Day.

Since the beginning of the program, more than 8.2 million students around the world have joined with nearly 16,000 FedEx volunteers in 10,000 schools for International Walk to School Day – Walk This Way’s largest and most widespread activity.

“I love events like this where the Auburn School District, Valley Regional Fire Authority and the City of Auburn can partner in our community!” exclaimed Backus. “It might seem like a small thing – a walk to school event, but it can provide an opportunity for our kids to adopt a healthier lifestyle with something simple like walking more. Also, I love that Robert & Wren encouraged me to get a trampoline in my office!”
