VRFA Blotter: Vehicle Fire Report Requires Bomb Squad

The Valley Regional Fire Authority responded to 299 calls for service for the week of July 5-11, 2021. Year to Date our Valley Professional Firefighters have responded to a total of 7,860 calls.  This is a 14.7% increase from 2020 (6,852).

Call Breakdown:

215 (72%) were aid calls. Total aid calls in 2021 so far are 5,914 up 15.9%, compared to 2020’s (5,103).

15 (5%) were fire calls. The number of fire calls is up by 38.1%, with 2021 having 261calls and 2020 having 189.

69 (23%) were calls categorized as other. The number of other calls is up (8.0%), with 2021 currently at 1,685 calls compared to 2020’s 1,560. Other calls include water rescues, hazmat calls, and ladder requests.

Auburn School Foundation School Supply Drive!

VRFA St. 31 will be a drop off location for the Auburn School Foundation School Supply Drive. The collection bucket will be out Monday – Friday, 8am to 5pm, through August 16.

VRFA Calls for Service

• Aid Call: (Auburn) On Monday, July 12 at 6:23 p.m. firefighters responded to a mid 80’s female who had fallen and had neck and back pain. Patient was stabilized and transported to MultiCare Auburn by a VRFA aid unit.

• Vehicle Fire: (Auburn) On Tuesday, July 13 at 7:24 p.m., firefighters responded to the report of a vehicle fire. Upon arrival, the vehicle fire was out but the vehicle had a suspicious wire hanging out from underneath the car into the trunk. The vehicle also appeared to be abandoned. PD was called to the scene and the bomb squad was dispatched to the scene in order to investigate the wire. The bomb squad was able to access the trunk area using their robot and determine there was no bomb present. The incident is under investigation.

• Aid Call: (Auburn) On Wednesday, July 14 at 1:22 p.m., firefighters assisted a patient that walked to Station 32. The patient was an adult male behaving erratically and hallucinating that he was being chased by a man with a gun. The patient refused to be examined or treated and did not meet any criteria for involuntary admission to the hospital by the Police Department. The patient left the scene.

• Assault: (Auburn) On Thursday, July 15 at 5:50 p.m. firefighters responded to a call for aid at a local repair shop. On arrival an adult male was found bleeding from what appeared to be assault with a hammer. King County Medic One was requested for advanced life support care. The man was transported to Harborview Medical Center by paramedics.

• Brush Fires: (Auburn) On Thursday July 15 at 5:52 p.m., VRFA fire units responded near the Auburn Golf Course for a smoke investigation. Units on scene spotted a smoke to the West of their location. They arrived to find three small brush fires off the Green River Trail. Multiple units were requested and crews extinguished the fire and dug lines around the perimeters.

• Aid Call: (Auburn) On Friday, July 16 at 8:16 p.m., firefighters were called to an elderly female that was confused and lost. Firefighters evaluated the patient for injuries and determined that she required further medical treatment in a hospital setting. VRFA aid unit transported the patient to the hospital and reunited her with her family.

• Aid Call: (Auburn) On Saturday, July 17 at 1:35 p.m., firefighters responded to an adult female that was unconscious and unresponsive. The patient was examined by Firefighters and King County Medics. She was transported to MultiCare Auburn Medical Center by paramedics.

• Vehicle Accident: (Auburn) On Sunday, July 18 at 1:10 p.m., firefighters responded to male patient involved in a single-vehicle rollover into an empty retention pond 15 feet below the road. The patient was evaluated by medics and transported to MultiCare Auburn Medical Center by the fire department.

The Community Assistance, Referrals, and Education Services (CARES) is a joint program between VRFA,  King County Emergency Medical Services division South King Fire & Rescue, Enumclaw, and Mountainview Fire and Rescue departments. Each CARES response vehicle is staffed 8 a.m. – 7 p.m. by one firefighter from each department and a social worker. The CARES unit is sent on less emergent calls in non-transport capable vehicles to provide basic patient evaluation, assistance, specific basic life support treatment on scene, and arrange for transport if medically necessary. CARES also referred patients to community services where needed.
