VRFA Blotter: Two Apartment Fires Cause Over $1 Million in Damages

The Valley Regional Fire Authority responded to 359 calls for service for the week of June 21-27, 2021. Year to Date our Valley Professional Firefighters have responded to a total of 6,855 calls.  This is a 12.8% increase from 2020 (6,079).

Call Breakdown:

260 (72%) were aid calls. Total aid calls in 2021 so far are 5,203 up 14.2%, compared to 2020’s (4,556).

15 (4%) were fire calls. The number of fire calls is up by 40.0%, with 2021 having 191 calls and 2020 having 136.

84 (23%) were calls categorized as other. The number of other calls is up (5.3%), with 2021 currently at 1,387 calls compared to 2020’s 1,461. VRFA Calls for Service

  • Minor Fire: (Auburn) On Monday, June 21 at 3:52 p.m., firefighters responded to smoke in a residence. Smoke was coming through the wall from neighbors unit. Fire crews arrived and found smoke was from food on the stove that had not spread to the structure. Crews assisted the occupant in clearing smoke from the unit.
  • Stump Fire: (Auburn) On Tuesday, June 22 at 08:42 a.m., firefighters extinguished a large stump that was burning in a wooded area behind Cedar Lanes Park. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
  • Motor Vehicle Accident: (Auburn) On Wednesday, July 23 at 10:10 a.m., firefighters responded to a four-car accident on Highway 18. Firefighters arrived and found that only one of the involved parties required aid. The patient was evaluated and transported to MultiCare Auburn Medical Center by VRFA firefighters. The scene was turned over to Washington State Patrol.
  • River Rescue: (Auburn) On Thursday, June 24 at 1:28 p.m., Zone 3 rescue technicians responded to a report of an unconscious patient being pulled from the river in an area with difficult access. Units from Renton RFA, Puget Sound RFA, Mountain View F&R, and VRFA responded. The patient was located by a boat crew from Puget Sound and transported down river by raft to King County Medic One personnel. He was treated on scene and transported to MultiCare Auburn Medical Center by Medic 12.
  • Aid Call: (Auburn) On Friday, June 25 at 7:56 a.m., firefighters assisted Boeing Fire with an adult male complaining of facial injuries from an industrial accident. The patient was evaluated by paramedics and transported to the Harborview trauma center by Air Lift.
  • Aid Call: (Auburn) On Saturday, June 26 at 2:30 p.m., firefighters responded to a report of a 5-car motor vehicle accident. Crews arrived to find multiple car involved that were blocking two lanes of Auburn Way North. One of the drivers involved, an adult male, was complaining of minor injuries. He refused treatment and the scene was turned over to Auburn Police.
  • Apartment Fire: (Auburn) On Saturday, June 26 at 6:42 p.m., firefighters responded to the report of an apartment on fire. Firefighters arrived to find the stairwell fully involved along with a single unit on floor 3 that was spreading to other units. Firefighters from VRFA, Puget Sound RFA, South King F&R and King County Medic were dispatched to the second alarm. A dog in the main fire unit was the only casualty reported. Thirty-three residents were displaced and Red Cross assisted them in finding shelter for the evening. The fire is under investigation by the VRFA Fire Marshal’s office.
  • Structure Fire: (Auburn) On Sunday June 27 at 4:03 PM firefighters responded to a structure fire in a two-story four-plex apartment building. The fire was quickly brought under control by responding units. There were no injuries to civilians. One firefighter was transported to MultiCare Auburn Medical Center with heat-related issues by private ambulance for precautionary testing.

Fire Investigations

  • On Saturday, June 26, a fire occurred at 2901 Auburn Way S in Sherwood Gardens Building
    K. The fire started on the third floor of the 24-unit garden style apartment. Fire damage was
    limited to three units, the roof and the electrical system; six additional units had notable water
    damage. Fire cause is resistance heating involving a fan and AC unit. The fire displaced 33
    people and damage is estimated at $600,000 to the structure and $100,000 of contents.
  • On Sunday, June 27, a fire occurred at Grayton Square Apartments at 2810 F St SE. The fire
    originated in a ground floor unit of the 4-plex and extended to the attic. Estimated fire damage
    is $450,000 to the structure and $260,000 in content loss. The cause of the fire was a kitchen
    fire starting in a stove fan. The fire displaced 13 residence.

C.A.R.E.S.

  • CARES Captian off

The Community Assistance, Referrals, and Education Services (CARES) is a joint program between VRFA,  King County Emergency Medical Services division South King Fire & Rescue, Enumclaw, and Mountainview Fire and Rescue departments. Each CARES response vehicle is staffed 8 a.m. – 7 p.m. by one firefighter from each department and a social worker. The CARES unit is sent on less emergent calls in non-transport capable vehicles to provide basic patient evaluation, assistance, specific basic life support treatment on scene, and arrange for transport if medically necessary. CARES also referred patients to community services where needed.
