VRFA Blotter: September 14-20, 2020

Below are just a few of the calls the Valley Regional Fire Authority responded to for the week of September 14-20, 2020. VRFA firefighters responded to a total of 280 calls for service during this week. 214 were aid calls, 6 were fire calls, and 60 were categorized as other. Other calls include water rescues, HazMat calls, and ladder requests.

Year to Date our Valley Professional Firefighters have responded to a total of 9,450 calls. This is a .07% decrease from 2019 (9,520 calls). Total aid calls in 2020 so far are 6,939 (-1.8% compared to 2019’s 7,064). The number of fire calls is up by 1.2%, with 2020 having 330 calls and 2019 having 326. The number of other calls is also up (2.4%), with 2020 currently at 2,181 calls compared to 2019’s 2,130.

Two of VRFA’s staff have returned home safely from their deployments, while two remain deployed. Battalion Chief Strong arrived home Monday after his work as part of a specialty team addressing COVID-19 prevention among firefighters working the Dolan fire in California.

Firefighter Nylund, who was assigned to Washington Task Force 1 in Oregon, has also returned after assisting with search operations.

Two firefighters remain in southwest Oregon on the Slater fire. They have been assisting a hot shot crew, digging fire lines, and helping with back burn operations. The first and third photos are from their deployment.

• Car vs. Child: (Auburn) On Monday, September 14, at 12:45 p.m., firefighters responded to a car vs a two year old child at the 3000 block of M ST SE. Firefighter found the two-year-old patient on the ground in the parking lot. The patient was evaluated by firefighters and King County Medics and transported to Harborview Medical Center via medics and firefighters from the VRFA.

• Aid Call: (Lakeland Hills) On Tuesday, September 15, at 8:43 a.m., firefighters and medics responded to a 73 year-old male complaining of chest pressure. Firefighters and medics evaluated the patient. The patient was transported to MultiCare Auburn Medical Center by private ambulance.baby boy, blue safety pin, baby boy delivery, baby boy delivered

• Child Birth: (Pacific) On Wednesday, September 16, at 8:06 p.m. firefighters responded to reports of an adult female in labor. On scene, VRFA personnel found a full-term patient and within five minutes delivered a healthy baby boy. Mom and baby were transported to MultiCare Auburn Medical Center by private ambulance for evaluation.

• Brush Fire: (Lea Hill) On Tuesday, September 17, at 10:32 p.m., firefighters responded to a report of a large brush fire with exposure to a tree with residential homes in close proximity. Two fire engines arrived on scene to find a large pile of yard debris on fire beneath a large old-growth cedar tree. Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire and established control lines around the fire perimeter. The fire and surrounding area were overhauled and “mopped up”. The cause was deemed accidental. There was no damage to nearby property.

• Car Accident: (Auburn) On Friday, September 18, at 7:43 a.m., firefighters assisted multiple patients that were involved in a car accident. The patients complained of various minor injuries. One middle aged male patient was transported to MultiCare Auburn Medical Center by private ambulance.

• Aid Call: (Auburn) On Saturday, September 19, at 3:08 p.m., firefighters responded to a 30’s year- old male with multiple gunshot wounds to the chest. Firefighters and Medics performed CPR and wound/bleeding mitigation. The scene was turned over to Auburn Police.

• Motor Vehicle Accident: (Auburn) On Sunday, September 20, at 9:45 p.m., VRFA firefighters and King County paramedics responded to Westbound Highway 18 and Weyerhaeuser Way for a vehicle roll-over accident. Firefighters arrived to find a vehicle that was heavily damaged after rolling over several times, coming to rest on its side. One patient was trapped inside the vehicle. Firefighters utilized hydraulic extrication equipment to cut the vehicle apart to remove the patient. That patient was evaluated and treated at the scene. He was transported to St. Francis Hospital by a VRFA aid unit.

• Shooting: (Lakeland Hills) On Sunday, September 20, at 10:00 p.m., VRFA firefighters and King County paramedics responded to the area of Panorama Dr. and Francis Ct. for a man stating that he had been shot. Firefighters arrived find the patient sitting in his vehicle with a gunshot to the arm. He stated that he had driven to this location after being shot at a different location. His wounds were treated and he was transported to MultiCare Auburn Medical Center by a private ambulance.

Fire Investigations:

No fires requiring the investigation team were reported for the period.
