Below are just a few of the calls the Valley Regional Fire Authority responded to for the week of October 19-25, 2020. VRFA firefighters responded to a total of 233 calls for service during this week. 180 were aid calls, 5 were fire calls, and 48 were categorized as other. Other calls include water rescues, HazMat calls, and ladder requests.

Year to Date our Valley Professional Firefighters have responded to a total of 10,702 calls. This is a .06% decrease from 2019 (10,767 calls). Total aid calls in 2020 so far are 7,857 (-1.6% compared to 2019’s 7,988). The number of fire calls is up by 3.6%, with 2020 having 371 calls and 2019 having 358. The number of other calls is also up (2.2%), with 2020 currently at 2,474 calls compared to 2019’s 2,421.

Wearing Pink for Breast Cancer Awareness

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.  VRFA is among the many first responder agencies across the nation to wear pink each October. Wearing special pink gear, patches or shirts is the agency and its members’ way of showing support for those battling breast, who have beat, and who we have lost to breast cancer.

COVID-19 Testing in Auburn

The free COVID-19 testing provided through the collaboration of local fire agencies and Seattle-King County Public Health is still available. Pre-registration is no longer necessary. The Auburn Covid-19 testing site is available Monday – Saturday 9:30 am – 5:30pm. The site is located  2701 C St SW, Auburn, WA 98001 (get directions PLEASE NOTEYou will enter on Hopping St – look for the water tower.)

911 Calls For Service

  • Natural Gas Leak: (Auburn) On Tuesday, October 20, at 12:50 a.m., firefighters responded to the  Jack in the Box at the 500 block of A St. SE for a natural gas leak. Firefighters arrived, evacuated  the building, and secured the gas at the meter. The building was aired out and then turned over to  Puget Sound Energy.
  • Aid Call: (Lea Hill) On Tuesday, October 20 at 11:38 a.m., firefighters assisted a female  experiencing postpartum bleeding. Patient was treated and transported to MultiCare Auburn  Medical Center by private ambulance.
  • Sprinkler Water Flow: (Lakeland Hills) On Wednesday, October 21 at 12:31 p.m., firefighters were called to investigate a water flow alarm at McDonald’s. Firefighters arrived to find no fire but a sprinkler head had activated in the freezer. Firefighters quickly shut down and drained the fire sprinkler system then assisted employees with removal of water from the restaurant.
  • Motor Vehicle Accident: (Auburn) On Thursday, October 22, at 8:03 p.m., firefighters responded to a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of 15th St NE and Auburn Way North. Firefighters quickly assessed the vehicles and then occupants for injuries. One female patient had chest and neck pain. She was evaluated on scene and transported to MultiCare Auburn Medical Center by VRFA aid car.
  • House Fire: (South Auburn) On Friday, October 23 at 10:53 p.m., firefighters responded to a house
    on fire. Firefighters used multiple hose lines to control the blaze. The cause of the fire is under
    investigation.
  • Shooting: (Lea Hill) On Friday, October 23 at 4:44 p.m., firefighters responded to an adult male
    who suffered a gunshot wound to his thigh and was pistol-whipped. Patient was treated by firefighters and transported to Harborview Medical Center by King County Medics.
  • Motor Vehicle Accident: (Sumner) On Saturday, October 24 at 1:21 p.m., VRFA units were dispatched to a two car accident on Highway 167. VRFA units arrived with East Pierce Fire to find no injuries. VRFA units provided scene safety for East Pierce and then returned in-service.
  • Aid Call: (Lea Hill) On Sunday, October 25 at 6:07 p.m., firefighters assisted an elderly male who
    fell out of a tree while trimming branches. Patient was treated and transported to MultiCare Auburn
    Medical Center by private ambulance.

Fire Investigations

On Saturday, October 24, an accidental fire occurred in the 900 block of E ST SE in the City of Auburn. Crews arrived to find heavy fire, which originated in a bedroom of a single-family residence. Dollar loss is estimated to be $225,000.
