Below are just a few of the calls the Valley Regional Fire Authority responded to for the week of November 16-22, 2020. VRFA firefighters responded to a total of 255 calls for service during this week. 190 were aid calls, 9 were fire calls, and 56 were categorized as other. Other calls include water rescues, HazMat calls, and ladder requests.

Year to Date our Valley Professional Firefighters have responded to a total of 11,704 calls. This is a .08% decrease from 2019 (11,800 calls). Total aid calls in 2020 so far are 8,616 (-1.5% compared to 2019’s 8,743). The number of fire calls is up by 6.1%, with 2020 having 402 calls and 2019 having 379. The number of other calls is also up (0.3%), with 2020 currently at 2,686 calls compared to 2019’s 2,678.

You can help save the holidays for kids in Auburn! The Toys for Kids drive is still on for 2020 – it will just look a little different this year. Instead of doing in-person toy collections, the Valley Professional Firefighters ask that donations be made through their charity GoFundMe (click).

Families in need should contact the Auburn Food Bank to sign up on the Auburn Food Bank website (click)or by calling 253-833-8925. To be eligible, families must live in Algona, Auburn, and Pacific.

COVID-19 continues to pose a real risk to the health and wellbeing of Auburn’s residents. The Valley Regional Fire Authority, with fellow valley fire agencies, is still hosting a drive-up COVID-19 testing site on C St SE at the GSA site.  If you have any symptoms or have been exposed to someone with COVID-19, get tested! It is better to be safe than be an asymptomatic carrier and unknowingly spread the disease.

Calls for Service:

• Compost Fire: (Lea Hill) On Monday, November 16 at 7:00 a.m. firefighters monitored a very large compost fire that started as a result of spontaneous combustion. The fire is still under periodic fire watch at the time of this report. There are no threats or injuries at this time.

• Vehicular Assault: (Auburn) On Monday, November 16 at 7:22 a.m., firefighters responded to an adult couple who had been pepper-sprayed then struck by a car as it fled the scene. The patients were treated for minor injuries and were able to remain home.

• Chimney Fire: (Auburn) On Wednesday, November 18 at 1:15 p.m., firefighters assisted a homeowner ensure that a chimney fire was extinguished. Firefighters used a thermal imaging camera to check that the fire had not extended into the attic space of the home. The homeowner was advised to have the chimney inspected and cleaned.

• Vehicle Collision: (Highway 18) On Wednesday, November 18 at 4:45 p.m., firefighters responded to a report of a two-vehicle accident. Firefighters arrived to find one patient trapped in the back seat of a compact car. Firefighters requested King County paramedics and Airlift Northwest to respond. Two patients with life-threatening injuries were stabilized by firefighters and paramedics. Paramedics took the two patients to Harborview Medical Center, one by Airlift and the other by ground transport. A third patient was taken to a local hospital by private ambulance.

• Aid Call: (Auburn) On Thursday, November 19 at 11:10 a.m., firefighters responded with APD to a domestic violence call. Two officers and one civilian were treated for minor injuries on scene. Both officers were transported by APD to MultiCare Auburn Medical Center for evaluation.

• Aid Call: (Auburn) On Friday, November 20 at 7:43 a.m., firefighters responded to an elderly male patient who was found unconscious. Firefighters and King County Medic One personnel evaluated the patient. He was then transported to St. Joseph Hospital by Medic 6.

• Vegetation Fire: (Auburn) On Sunday, November 22 at 11:26 a.m., firefighters responded to a report of a debris pile on fire. Firefighters arrived to find a large pile of wood chips and grass clippings were decomposing and creating a lot of heat and some smoke. Firefighters contacted the City of Auburn to have their crews spread out the compost pile to cool it.

Fire Investigations:

  • On Friday, November 20, VRFA FMO assisted Puget Sound Regional Fire with the investigation
    of a deck fire that extended into the attached home at 24006 142nd Ave SE, Kent. The cause
    of the fire was from a grease fire in a large refrigerator-sized smoker appliance that spread to
    adjacent materials and to the structure. There were no injuries; the fire displaced 5 adults and 2
    children. Damage is estimated at $250,000 to the dwelling and $100,000 in contents.
  • On Sunday, November 22, an incendiary fire occurred in the 1900 block of West Valley Highway
    South in the City of Auburn. Fire Investigators responded to a passenger vehicle with heavy fire
    involvement. As the investigation progressed, it became obvious that the vehicle was
    stripped prior to the incident. The case will remain an open active joint investigation with Auburn
    PD.

The Community Assistance, Referrals, and Education Services (CARES) is a joint program between VRFA,  King County Emergency Medical Services division South King Fire & Rescue, Enumclaw, and Mountainview Fire and Rescue departments. Each CARES response vehicle is staffed 8 a.m. – 7 p.m. by one firefighter from each department and a social worker. The CARES unit is sent on less emergent calls in non-transport capable vehicles to provide basic patient evaluation, assistance, specific basic life support treatment on scene, and arrange for transport if medically necessary. CARES also referred patients to community services where needed.
