VRFA Blotter: July 5-11, 2021

The Valley Regional Fire Authority responded to 319 calls for service for the week of July 5-11, 2021. Year to Date our Valley Professional Firefighters have responded to a total of 7,563 calls.  This is a 15.0% increase from 2020 (6.578).

Call Breakdown:

245 (77%) were aid calls. Total aid calls in 2021 so far are 5,704 up 16.3%, compared to 2020’s (4,905).

25 (8%) were fire calls. The number of fire calls is up by 45.0%, with 2021 having 248 calls and 2020 having 171.

49 (15%) were calls categorized as other. The number of other calls is up (7.3%), with 2021 currently at 1,611 calls compared to 2020’s 1,502. VRFA Calls for Service

  • Brush Fire: (Auburn) On July 5 at 2:07 p.m., firefighters responded to a report of a brush fire in a
    field on West Valley Hwy. N next to 15th St. NW. Personnel arrived and found a large brush fire that
    was moving into a wooded area. Firefighters from VRFA, South King and Puget Sound worked to
    quickly extinguish the fire. The area was overhauled and a foam layer was put down to ensure the
    fire was completely extinguished. No cause of how the fire started was found.
  • Aid Call: (Lea Hill) On Tuesday, July 6 at 8:26 a.m., firefighters responded to an adult female having
    chest pain. Firefighters arrived and found the patient in pain and requiring a paramedic evaluation.
    The patient was stabilized for transport and taken by paramedics to UW of Seattle.
  • Unknown Fire: (Lea Hill) On Thursday July 8, at 3:06 a.m., firefighters were dispatched to a report
    of an unknown fire. Firefighters arrived to find a large pile of natural vegetation that had
    spontaneously ignited and was burning. The homeowner was supplied with fire hose and advised
    how to put the fire out.
  • Motor Vehicle Collision: (Kent) On Thursday, July 8 at 4:24 p.m., firefighters responded to a report
    of a one vehicle rollover accident. Personnel arrived and found on car on its roof and the two
    occupants out walking around. They were examined and found with only minor injuries. The scene
    was turned over to Kent PD.
  • MVA: (Lea Hill) On Friday, July 9 at 6:07 p.m., firefighters assisted a child that was injured in a dirt
    bike accident. The patient was treated and transported by paramedics to Harborview Medical
    Center.
  • Aid Call: (Auburn) On Saturday, July 10 at 3:15 p.m., firefighters responded with Auburn Police to
    an adult male complaining of swallowing an illegal substance. The patient was evaluated on scene
    and was transported to MultiCare Auburn Medical Center by private ambulance.
  • Aid Call: (Auburn) On Sunday, July 11 at 4:55 p.m. firefighters responded to reports of an injured
    jockey at Emerald Downs. VRFA personnel provided medical care and transportation for a jockey
    with a possible clavicle fracture. The patient was transported to Multicare Auburn Medical Center
    by private ambulance.
  • Aid Call: (Lea Hill) On Sunday, July 11 at 9:13 a.m., firefighters responded to an unresponsive adult
    female. Firefighters quickly determined that the patient was suffering from a narcotic overdose and
    Narcan was administered. The patient regained consciousness after a few minutes and was
    transported to Multicare Auburn Medical Center by private ambulance.

  • There were no new calls for service for the Fire Investigation Unit

*CARES 336 was only in service 7/6 and 7/7 due to the 7/5 holiday and no available staffing on 7/8

The Community Assistance, Referrals, and Education Services (CARES) is a joint program between VRFA,  King County Emergency Medical Services division South King Fire & Rescue, Enumclaw, and Mountainview Fire and Rescue departments. Each CARES response vehicle is staffed 8 a.m. – 7 p.m. by one firefighter from each department and a social worker. The CARES unit is sent on less emergent calls in non-transport capable vehicles to provide basic patient evaluation, assistance, specific basic life support treatment on scene, and arrange for transport if medically necessary. CARES also referred patients to community services where needed.
