VRFA Blotter: July 27 – August 2, 2020

Below are just a few of the calls the Valley Regional Fire Authority responded to for the week of July 27-August 2, 2020. VRFA firefighters responded to a total of 284 calls for service during this week. 206 were aid calls, 10 were fire calls, and 68 were categorized as other. Other calls include water rescues, HazMat calls, and ladder requests.

Year to Date our Valley Professional Firefighters have responded to a total of 7,439 calls. This is a 5.2% decrease from 2019 (7,845 calls). Total aid calls in 2020 so far are 5,526 (-5.4% compared to 2019’s 5,841). The number of fire calls is down by 16.7%, with 2020 having 224 calls and 2019 having 269. The number of other calls is also down (2.7%), with 2020 currently at 1,689 calls compared to 2019’s 1,735.

VRFA sent members of its Wildland Team to the Colockum Fire near Wenatchee on July 24. 

911 Calls for Service

  • Wires: (Algona) On Monday, July 27, at 11:40 a.m. E338 was dispatched to lines down along the interurban trail. Shortly after arrival, crews witnessed 115kV transmission lines arcing and setting a row of nearby trees on fire.  E338 set up structure protection for the nearby houses and awaited PSE, who eventually shut down the lines and called out a tree crew to clear them. No private property was damaged.
  • Motor Vehicle Accident: (Mountain View Fire) On Tuesday, July 28, VRFA unit responded with Mountain View Fire and King County paramedics to the 32100 block of the Auburn Black Diamond Rd. for a serious motor vehicle accident.  Arriving units found one patient trapped in the vehicle in critical condition and a second patient that had self-extricated and had minor injuries.  Extrication was started and resources were dispatched. Firefighters extricated the patient from the vehicle utilizing hydraulic tools.  The patient was treated and packaged for transport via Airlift Northwest to Harborview Medical Center.  The second patient was transported to Valley Medical Center.
  • Aid Call: (Auburn) On Wednesday, July 29, at 08:37 a.m., firefighters responded to an adult male that sustained a deep laceration to his arm from misusing a power saw. The patient was evaluated and treated on scene then transported to MultiCare Auburn Medical Center by private ambulance.
  • Aid Service: (Lakeland Hills) On Thursday, July 30, at 6:18 p.m., firefighters responded to a medical alarm.  Firefighters found an adult female trapped in her room, unable to stand, locked behind her door.  VRFA personnel made access to the room, check the subject for injuries, she was uninjured.  The patient was placed back into her power chair and left at home.
  • Aid Call: (Lea Hill) On Friday, July 31, at 6:46 p.m., firefighters responded to evaluate a man in Auburn Police custody. The middle-aged patient sustained facial injuries while fighting with police. He refused to allow firefighters to evaluate him. The patient was taken by Auburn Police to MultiCare Auburn Medical Center for evaluation.
  • Aid Call: (Pacific) On Saturday, August 1, at 6:31 p.m., firefighters responded to an adult male who was having an adverse reaction to ingesting edible marijuana. The patient was evaluated and transported to MultiCare Auburn Medical Center by private ambulance.
  •  Vehicle Collision: (Pacific Raceways) On Sunday, August 2, at 11:14 a.m., firefighters responded to a low-speed racecar vs. golf cart collision. One middle-aged woman sustained non-life threatening injuries, and was transported to Harborview Medical Center. A toddler suffered a serious facial injury, and was flown to Harborview by an Airlift Northwest helicopter.
  • Brush Fire: (Kent) On Sunday, August 2, at 6:00 p.m., VRFA firefighters responded with Puget Sound and South King Fire units to 272nd and I5.  Crews battled four brush fires along I5 that extended approximately a quarter-mile long.  Cause of the fires is unknown and no injuries were sustained.

There were no new Fire Investigations this week.
