VRFA Blotter: July 20-26, 2020

Below are just a few of the calls the Valley Regional Fire Authority responded to for the week of July 20-26, 2020. VRFA firefighters responded to a total of 274 calls for service during this week. 196 were aid calls, 23 were fire calls, and 55 were categorized as other. Other calls include water rescues, HazMat calls, and ladder requests.

Year to Date our Valley Professional Firefighters have responded to a total of 7,154 calls. This is a 5.8% decrease from 2019 (7,598 calls). Total aid calls in 2020 so far are 5,320 (-5.9% compared to 2019’s 5,655). The number of fire calls is down by 15.7%, with 2020 having 214 calls and 2019 having 254. The number of other calls is also down (4.1%), with 2020 currently at 1,620 calls compared to 2019’s 1,689.

911 – Requests for Service

• Vehicle Fire: (Lakeland Hills) On Monday, July 20 at 6:52 p.m., firefighters responded to assist East Pierce Fire and Rescue with an abandoned passenger vehicle fire in the bushes on the side of the road. VRFA personnel supplied water to East Pierce Engine 114 and checked for spot fires in the surrounding bushes. The scene was turned over to the Pierce County Sherriff.

• Motor Vehicle Accident: (Lea Hill) On Tuesday, July 21 at 4:01 p.m., firefighters responded to high-speed multiple car accident along westbound Highway 18 near Auburn Way South. Four patients were triaged at the scene. Two patients were treated and transported to MultiCare Auburn Medical Center by private ambulance.

• Aid Call: (Auburn) On Wednesday, July 22 at 3:13 p.m., firefighters responded to a child with an impaled left thumb. The patient was examined and treated by firefighters then transported to MultiCare Auburn Medical center by private ambulance.

• Stove Fire: (Auburn) On Thursday, July 23 at 12:27 p.m., firefighters responded to a reported minor fire in the 4200 block of Auburn Way South. First arrival units found a stove fire that had started when the resident placed a wooden cutting board on top of the stove and turned on a burner. The fire was extinguished prior to fire department arrival. One occupant was treated for smoke inhalation and transported to MultiCare Auburn Medical Center via private ambulance. VRFA personnel gave the residents a new working smoke detector and educated them on the importance of having one in their home.

• Brush Fire: (Algona) On Friday, July 24 at 1:17 p.m., firefighters extended 350 feet of hose, cut through a chain link fence, and used a ladder as a bridge to gain access to a brush fire. The fire was extinguished quickly. The cause of the fire was reported as children lighting fireworks and is under investigation by the Algona Police Department.

• CPR: (Auburn) On Saturday, July 25 at 9:49 a.m., firefighters responded to an elderly male in cardiac arrest. VRFA personnel along with King County Medic One performed CPR and shocked patient in the field. The patient regained a pulse in the field and he was transported to MultiCare Auburn Medical Center by paramedics.

• Brush Fire: (Auburn) On Sunday, July 26 at 3:28 p.m., firefighters were responding to two different incidents, both related to an initially smaller brush fire in tall grass and wetland area. The fire had consistent growth and was moving rapidly. Firefighters arrived to cut off the fires’ spread and extinguish the blaze. The fire had grown to about 75’ x 50’ before being fully contained.

• Aid Call: (Auburn) On Sunday, July 26 at 12:22 p.m., firefighters and King County Medic One responded to assist a male that had been assaulted and stabbed multiple times. The patient’s wounds were treated on scene and a private ambulance transported him to MultiCare Auburn Medical Center for further treatment.

Fire Investigations:

On Monday, July 20, an incendiary fire occurred in the 28800 block of 124th Ave SE in the City of Auburn. The fire consumed a large amount of the single-family residence including the deck before extending into the overhead. The fire remains under a joint investigation with Auburn Police. Dollar loss is estimated at $175,000.
