VRFA Blotter: Head-On Collision Results in Use of Jaws of Life, Airlift Transport

The Valley Regional Fire Authority responded to 303 calls for service for the week of November 1-7, 2022 (last week 292). Year to Date our Valley Professional Firefighters have responded to a total of 13,377 calls for service. This is a 4.4% increase from 2021 (12,818).

Calls for Service Breakdown:

251 (83%) were aid calls. Total aid calls in 2022 so far are up 11,377.4%, compared to 2021’s (10,898).

49 (16%) were fire calls. The number of fire calls is up by 13.9%, with 2022 having 1,935 calls and 2021 having 1,699.

3 (1%) were calls categorized as other. The number of other calls in 2022 is up 19.9 % with 265 calls in 2021 only having 221. ‘Other’ calls include water rescues, water over roadways, downed lines, hazmat calls, and ladder requests.

VRFA Calls for Service

  • Residential Fire: (Pacific) On Monday, October 31st at 6:00 p.m., firefighters responded to an abandoned house fire. Firefighters arrived to find the house fully involved. Firefighters extinguished the fire quickly and the cause is under investigation by the VRFA’s Fire Marshal’s Office.
  • Aid Call: (Pacific) On Tuesday, November 1st at 2:16 p.m., firefighters responded to an adult female vomiting on the side of the road. Firefighters arrived to find the patient unconscious near her car. Firefighters and paramedics treated the patient on the scene. The patient was transported by paramedics and one firefighter to Valley Medical Center for continued care.
  • Motor Vehicle Accident: (Lea Hill) On Wednesday, November 2nd at 9:25 p.m., firefighters responded to reports of a two-vehicle head-on collision with injuries. On the scene, two critical patients were found. VRFA personnel extricated one patient with the Jaws of Life and King County Paramedics treated both patients. PSRFA assisted with the other patient along with incident command activities. Both patients were subsequently transported to Harborview Medical Center; one was
    airlifted by helicopter, and the other was transported by King County Medics.
  • Aid Call: (Auburn) On Thursday, November 3rd, at 5:50 p.m., firefighters responded to an adult male complaining of confusion and lethargy. Firefighters evaluated the patient, and he was transported to a local hospital by private ambulance for further definitive care.
  • Wires: (Auburn) On Friday, November 4th at 9:30 p.m., firefighters were called to investigate wires down arcing and sparking causing a small brush fire. Firefighters arrived to find wires down across the roadway with minor fire and arcing in trees. VRFA firefighters secured area, called for PSE, and awaited their arrival.
  • Aid Call: (Pacific) On Saturday, October 5th at 10:10 a.m., firefighters responded to an adult male with a head injury from a fall. The patient was evaluated and treated on scene. The patient was transported to MultiCare Auburn Medical Center by private ambulance.
  • Stabbing: (Algona) On Sunday, November 6th at 8:02 p.m., firefighters responded to an adult male who had been stabbed in the abdomen. Firefighters treated the patient, and he was transported to Harborview Medical Center by King County Medic One paramedics.

On  Monday, October 31st. an Incendiary house fire occurred in the 100  block of   Wayne  Ave in the  City of  Pacific. The fire damage was located throughout the interior of the home, resulting in a total loss of the structure. The dollar loss is estimated at $76,000. This remains an open/active investigation with the Pacific Police Department.

On Thursday, November 3rd, an undetermined fire occurred in the 6100 Block of S 287th St in the City of Auburn. The fire occurred in an unoccupied single-family residence with heavy transient activity. The dollar loss is estimated at $309,000. The case is inactive/closed.

The Community Assistance, Referrals, and Education Services (CARES) program: each CARES response vehicle is staffed 8 a.m. – 7 p.m. by firefighters and a social worker. The CARES unit is sent on less emergent calls in non-transport capable vehicles to provide basic patient evaluation, assistance, specific basic life support treatment on scene, and arrange for transport if medically necessary. CARES also referred patients to community services where needed.
