VRFA Blotter: Firefighters Rescue 6-Year-Old From Vicious Clipboard

The Valley Regional Fire Authority responded to 297 calls for service for the week of October 18-24, 2021. Year to Date our Valley Professional Firefighters have responded to a total of 12,279 calls. This is a 15.1% increase from 2020 (10,664).

Call Breakdown:

232 (78%) were aid calls. Total aid calls in 2021 so far are 9,115 up 16.5%, compared to 2020’s (7,826).

3 (1%) were fire calls. The number of fire calls is up by 16.8%, with 2021 having 430 calls and 2020 having 368.

62 (21%) were calls categorized as other. The number of other calls is up (10.6%), with 2021 currently at 2,791 calls compared to 2020’s 2,470. Other calls include water rescues, hazmat calls, and ladder requests.

VRFA Vaccination Mandate Status:

As of last Thursday (10/21), 98% of VRFA’s uniformed staff are fully vaccinated. One employee advanced their retirement due to the mandate. Six employees are on extended leave under the Family Medical Leave Act.

“The VRFA current staffing plan will remain in effect with no anticipated disruption to our service levels,” said VRFA Public Information & Education Officer Kimberly Terhune. “This will be accomplished through careful evaluation of all activities outside of emergency response and through additional overtime as needed. The VRFA’s vision is to create the safest community to live, work, and visit, and we are committed to supporting this vision as we move through all of the challenges related to the COVID-19 pandemic.”

VRFA Calls for Service

  • Aid Call: (Auburn) On Monday, October 18 at 12:26 p.m., firefighters responded to an adult female
    complaining of injuries from a fall while walking her dog. The firefighters advised the patient that she needed further evaluation at the hospital. She told them that she had no one to leave her dog with.
    After the firefighters placed the woman in a private ambulance to be transported to MultiCare Auburn
    Medical Center, they put the dog in the fire engine and drove it to the woman’s residence where they
    made sure it was safe and had food and water. (VRFA out here giving Animal Control a run for their money).
  • Vehicle Vs Pedestrian: (Auburn) On Tuesday, October 19 at 1:47 a.m., firefighters and King County
    Medic One responded to reports of a male laying in the roadway bleeding. On arrival, crews found
    a conscious adult male down in the roadway bleeding from an open leg fracture. The patient was
    stabilized and found to have multiple other injuries and was transported to Harborview Medical
    Center by King County Medic One with two firefighters to assist.
  • Aid Call: (Pacific) On Tuesday, October 19 at 3:59 p.m., firefighters assisted a 6-year-old female
    whose finger was stuck in a clipboard ring at school. Firefighters used hand tools to cut the binder
    clip away from her finger. The patient had no obvious injuries and was taken home by her guardian.
  • Service Call: (Auburn) On Wednesday, October 20 at 6:34 p.m., firefighters responded to a power
    transformer that had been damaged with wires exposed. Firefighters arrived to find a pad mounted
    transformer that was knocked off of its foundation. Firefighters secured the area around the
    transformer and remained on scene until PSE arrived.
  • Aid Call: (Lea Hill) On Thursday, October 21 at 1:30 p.m., firefighters responded to an infant with a
    rare heart condition. Firefighters gathered information from the child’s parents and on call nurse for
    detailed info regarding his recent surgeries. Paramedics were requested for an evaluation. It was
    determined, with the work of the child’s surgery team, that the patient be transported to Children’s
    Hospital. The patient was taken by ambulance with his mother’s company.
  • Aid Call: (Auburn) On Friday, October 22 at 9:15 a.m., firefighters were requested to the scene of
    an adult male with possible excited delirium. Firefighters and King County Medic One personnel
    treated the patient on scene. He was transported to MultiCare Auburn Medical Center for continued
    care.
  • Motorcycle Accident: (Auburn) On Friday, October 22 at 2:37 p.m., firefighters responded to reports
    of a single motorcycle accident near Hwy 167. On scene, firefighters found an adult male down in
    the middle of the intersection with minor injuries to his right shoulder and hip. The patient was placed in a c-collar and backboard and transported to MultiCare Auburn Medical Center by private
    ambulance for further evaluation.
  • Patient Assist: (Algona) On Saturday, October 23 at 6:10 p.m., firefighters responded to a report of a
    motorcycle involved in an accident. Algona Police arrived on scene first, and found that an elderly
    motorcycle rider had tipped his bike over on his driveway, and his leg was pinned underneath. APD
    lifted the bike off the man. The man declined further care and transport.

Fire Investigations

  • On Tuesday, October 20th, 2021, FM333 responded to a commercial fire in the 12700 block of
    SE 312th ST. Sprinkler activation contained the fire to the room of origin. The investigation has
    been closed by the investigator.

C.A.R.E.S.

  • 0 911 responses (CARES out of service last week due to staffing)
  • 11 referrals
  • 5 new enrollments
  • 3 enrollments closed
  • 53 total patients enrolled

The Community Assistance, Referrals, and Education Services (CARES) is a joint program between VRFA,  King County Emergency Medical Services division South King Fire & Rescue, Enumclaw, and Mountainview Fire and Rescue departments. Each CARES response vehicle is staffed 8 a.m. – 7 p.m. by one firefighter from each department and a social worker. The CARES unit is sent on less emergent calls in non-transport capable vehicles to provide basic patient evaluation, assistance, specific basic life support treatment on scene, and arrange for transport if medically necessary. CARES also referred patients to community services where needed.
