VRFA Blotter: Firefighters Provide Mutual Aid in Sumner, Federal Way

The Valley Regional Fire Authority responded to 292 calls for service for the week of October 25-October 31, 2022. Year to Date our Valley Professional Firefighters have responded to a total of 13,074 calls for service. This is a 4.4% increase from 2021 (12,521).

Calls for Service Breakdown:

292 (83%) were aid calls. Total aid calls in 2022 so far are 10,926 up 2.7%, compared to 2021’s (10,642).

43 (15%) were fire calls. The number of fire calls is up by 13.4%, with 2022 having 1,886 calls and 2021 having 1,663.

6 (2%) were calls categorized as other. The number of other calls in 2022 is up 20.7 % with 262 calls in 2021 only having 217. ‘Other’ calls include water rescues, water over roadways, downed lines, hazmat calls, and ladder requests.

VRFA Calls for Service

  • Injuries from an assault: (Auburn) On Monday, October 24th at 11:27 a.m., firefighters responded to an adult male who had been stabbed in the arm multiple times. Firefighters and paramedics evaluated and treated the patient on scene before he was transported to Valley Medical Center by private ambulance.
  • Motor Vehicle Collision: (Auburn) On Tuesday, October 25th at 12:21 p.m., firefighters responded to a four-vehicle collision on westbound 277th St. Most vehicles involved had moderate damage to the rear bumper, including one vehicle that had air bags deployed. All occupants of the vehicles were not injured and did not wish to seek further medical assistance.
  • Aid Call: (Auburn) On Wednesday, October 26th at 11:08 a.m., firefighters assisted an adult male complaining of chest pain. Firefighters assessed the patient and then transported him to MultiCare Auburn Medical Center for further treatment.
  • Mutual Aid Commercial Fire: (Sumner) On Friday, October 28th at 3:00 a.m., several VRFA units responded with East Pierce Fire for a 3-alarm commercial fire in downtown Sumner. VRFA units were assigned to assist with Defensive Fire Operations and to monitor exposures, so the fire did not spread to adjoining buildings.
  • Commercial Fire: (Federal Way) On Friday, October 28th at 3:03 p.m., firefighters from VRFA provided mutual aid to Federal Way for a fire in a multi-family residence. Crews arrived to assist with suppression efforts, including overhaul efforts to ensure the fire was controlled. There were no injuries to residents or firefighters. The American Red Cross was called to assist displaced families.
  • Aid Call: (Lakeland Hills) On Saturday, October 29th at 10:18 a.m., firefighters responded to a four-year-old with breathing difficulty due to an asthma attack. The patient was treated by firefighters and evaluated by paramedics prior to being transported to Marry Bridge Children’s Hospital by private ambulance.
  • Illegal Burn: (Auburn) On Sunday, October 30th at 12:31 p.m., firefighters were called to a subject burning various items in the yard. Firefighters arrived to find a homeowner burning a pallet and old wood flooring. The homeowner extinguished the fire while the crew was on the scene.

The Community Assistance, Referrals, and Education Services (CARES) program: each CARES response vehicle is staffed 8 a.m. – 7 p.m. by firefighters and a social worker. The CARES unit is sent on less emergent calls in non-transport capable vehicles to provide basic patient evaluation, assistance, specific basic life support treatment on scene, and arrange for transport if medically necessary. CARES also referred patients to community services where needed.
