VRFA Blotter: Firefighters Prevent Shed Fire from Spreading to Nearby Homes, Forest

The Valley Regional Fire Authority responded to 331 calls for service for the week of August 9-15, 2022 (327 last week). Year to Date our Valley Professional Firefighters have responded to a total of 9,610 calls for service. This is a 5.6% increase from 2021 (9,100).

Calls for Service Breakdown:

269  (81%) were aid calls. Total aid calls in 2022 so far are 8,113 up 4.8%, compared to 2021’s (7,743).

58 (18%) were fire calls. The number of fire calls is up by 9.6%, with 2022 having 1,308 calls and 2021 having 1,193.

4 (1%) were calls categorized as other. The number of other calls in 2022 is up 15.2 % with 189 calls in 2021 only having 164. ‘Other’ calls include water rescues, water over roadways, downed lines, hazmat calls, and ladder requests.

Calls for Service

  • Beauty Bark Fire: (Lakeland Hills) On Monday, August 8th at 10:57 p.m.,firefighters responded to a beauty bark fire next to a residence. Personnel found a 1’x1’ fire with a fence post burning. The crew used a forestry line and 5 gallons of water to extinguish the fire.
  • Aid Call: (Auburn) On Tuesday, August 9 at 8:14 a.m., firefighters responded to an adult female complaining of a laceration to her face after a fall. Firefighters found the patient sitting on the floor and bleeding from her face. Firefighters treated her injuries before she was transported to a local hospital by private ambulance for further care.
  • Motorcycle Accident: (Unincorporated Kent) On Wednesday, August 10th at 9:23 p.m., firefighters responded with Mountainview Fire & Rescue to a possible motorcycle accident. Upon arrival, firefighters determined that the patient had critical injuries and the response was upgraded
    accordingly. The patient was treated for multiple injuries on the scene by firefighters and paramedics. The patient was transported to Harborview Medical Center by Airlift NW.
  • Aid Call: (Auburn) On Thursday, August 11th at 10:39 a.m., firefighters responded to a male that had collapsed in a parking lot. Firefighters treated the patient and then transported the patient to Auburn MultiCare Medical Center by the fire department.
  • Shed Fire: (Auburn) On Friday, August 12 at 5:03 p.m., firefighters responded to a shed on fire spreading to a house and woods. VRFA firefighters with assistance from Mountainview Fire Rescue extinguished the shed fire and stopped the spread to nearby homes and forest. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
  • Brush Fire: (Auburn) On Saturday, August 13th at 15:59 p.m., firefighters responded to a brushfire in Southeast Auburn. Firefighters arrived to find a 10’x50’ grass fire that was spreading to nearby bushes and trees. Firefighters extinguished the fire with a booster line and overhauled the area. The cause of the fire was undetermined.
  • Car vs Pedestrian: (Auburn) On Sunday, August 14, 2022, at 3:55 p.m., firefighters responded to reports of a man on an electric scooter being hit by a car and thrown 30’. On scene, the patient was evaluated by King County Paramedics and treated by VRFA personnel for a broken ankle, and then transported to MultiCare Auburn Medical Center by A332.
  • Brush Fire: (Bonney Lake) On Sunday, August 14 at 9:58 a.m., firefighters responded as mutual aid to assist East Pierce Fire and Rescue to battle a football field-size brush fire threatening a neighborhood. VRFA firefighters conducted a direct attack on the leading edge of the fire and assisted with mopping up any hotspots.

The Community Assistance, Referrals, and Education Services (CARES) is a joint program between VRFA,  King County Emergency Medical Services division South King Fire & Rescue, Enumclaw, and Mountainview Fire and Rescue departments. Each CARES response vehicle is staffed 8 a.m. – 7 p.m. by one firefighter from each department and a social worker. The CARES unit is sent on less emergent calls in non-transport capable vehicles to provide basic patient evaluation, assistance, specific basic life support treatment on scene, and arrange for transport if medically necessary. CARES also referred patients to community services where needed.
