VRFA Blotter: Firefighters Evaluate Mom and Baby After Home Birth

The Valley Regional Fire Authority responded to 322 calls for service for the week of August 30-September 5, 2021. Year to Date our Valley Professional Firefighters have responded to a total of 10,120 calls.  This is a 15.6% increase from 2020 (8,752).

Call Breakdown:

228 (71%) were aid calls. Total aid calls in 2021 so far are 7,542 up 15.9%, compared to 2020’s (6,491).

13 (4%) were fire calls. The number of fire calls is up by 28.9%, with 2021 having 370 calls and 2020 having 287.

81 (25%) were calls categorized as other. The number of other calls is up (12.8%), with 2021 currently at 2,226 calls compared to 2020’s 1,974. Other calls include water rescues, hazmat calls, and ladder requests.

VRFA Calls for Service

  • Electrical Fire: (Auburn) On Tuesday, August 31 at 2:49 a.m., firefighters responded to a burning smell coming from the electrical outlet. Firefighters ensured that there was no fire in the outlet or wall. The power was secured at the breaker panel. The homeowner is going to follow up with an electrician to diagnose the problem.
  • Mutual Aid Apartment Fire: (Edgewood) On Tuesday, August 31 at 7:22 a.m., firefighters responded mutual aid with East Pierce Fire and Rescue to a 3-alarm apartment fire. 10 apartment units were involved with fire. VRFA firefighters were assigned to complete a search for victims and check for fire extension on the second floor of the fire damaged apartment building. VRFA firefighters worked with several agencies to bring the fire under control. One civilian was taken to the hospital for injuries sustained at the fire. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by East Pierce Fire and Rescue.
  • Aid Call: (Auburn) On Wednesday, September 1 at 6:19 p.m., firefighters responded to an 11 month old with an airway obstruction.  Firefighters and Paramedics evaluated the patient and Paramedics transported the patient to Mary Bridge.
  • Tree Fire: (Auburn) On Thursday, September 2 at 6:48 a.m., E331 responded to an unknown type fire on the 300 block of Auburn Way S. Upon arrival, E331 found 3 hedges on fire with no exposures. Firefighters extinguished the fire with a hose line and overhauled the area. The fire cause is under investigation. 
  • Motor Vehicle Accident: (Auburn) On Friday, September 3 at 7:28 a.m., firefighters responded to a two-car motor vehicle accident. No occupants of the vehicles were injured and nobody required transport to the hospital. Crews secured vehicles and cleaned up the scene prior to going back in service. 
  • Aid Call: (Auburn) On Friday, September 3 at 3:45 p.m., firefighters responded to a female child who suffered injuries after falling from a shopping cart. Firefighters treated the patient and her parents transported her to MultiCare Auburn Medical Center for continued care.
  • Motorcycle Accident: (Auburn) On Saturday, September 4 at 1:43 p.m., firefighters responded to a single motorcycle accident on the track at Pacific Raceways. An adult female was treated by firefighters, and evaluated by paramedics, before being transported to a local hospital by private ambulance.
  • Aid Call: (Auburn) On Sunday, September 5 at 4:21 p.m., firefighters responded to an adult female who had a live birth at home. Both patients were evaluated and mother wished to stay home with her newborn and follow up with her OB.

Fire Investigations

  • There were no new calls for service for the Fire Investigation Unit.

The Community Assistance, Referrals, and Education Services (CARES) is a joint program between VRFA,  King County Emergency Medical Services division South King Fire & Rescue, Enumclaw, and Mountainview Fire and Rescue departments. Each CARES response vehicle is staffed 8 a.m. – 7 p.m. by one firefighter from each department and a social worker. The CARES unit is sent on less emergent calls in non-transport capable vehicles to provide basic patient evaluation, assistance, specific basic life support treatment on scene, and arrange for transport if medically necessary. CARES also referred patients to community services where needed.
