VRFA Blotter: Firefighters Deal With a Nemesis – Candles.

The Valley Regional Fire Authority responded to 282 calls for service for the week of  May 9-15, 2022 (292 previous blotter). Year to Date our Valley Professional Firefighters have responded to a total of 5,753 calls for service. This is an 7.8% increase from 2021 (5,339).

Calls for Service Breakdown:

247 (88%) were aid calls. Total aid calls in 2022 so far are 4,905, up 6.3%, compared to 2021’s (4,614).

32 (11%) were fire calls. The number of fire calls is up by 18.0%, with 2022 having 747 calls and 2021 having 633.

3 (1%) were calls categorized as other. The number of other calls in 2022 is up (9.8%) with 101 calls in 2021 only having 92. ‘Other’ calls include water rescues, water over roadways, downed lines, hazmat calls, and ladder requests.

Calls for Service

  • Aid Call: (Auburn) On Monday, May 16th at 6:23 p.m., firefighters responded to a juvenile female with a cardiac issue. Firefighters and Medics evaluated the patient. The patient was transported to Seattle Children’s by Tri-Med’s nurse car.
  • Automatic Fire Alarm:(Auburn) On Tuesday, May 17th at 5:39 p.m., firefighters responded to an automatic fire alarm in a 6 story apartment building. Firefighters quickly determined the alarm was caused by smoke from a resident who was making candles. Firefighters assisted in ventilating the apartment and reset the alarm system.

  • Aid Call: (Auburn) On Wednesday, May 18 at 10:07 a.m., firefighters and King County Medic One responded to an unconscious, nonresponsive female. CPR was initiated and the patient regained a pulse. The patient was transported by Medic 6 to Multi Care Auburn Medical Center for further treatment.
  • Aid Call: (Algona) On Thursday, May 19th at 4:06 p.m., firefighters responded to an elderly female who had fallen earlier in the day. Firefighters determined the patient likely had dislocated her femur or had a hip injury. The patient was treated at the scene by firefighters and transported by private ambulance to MultiCare Auburn Medical Center.
  • Vehicle Fire: (Auburn) On Friday, May 20th at 10:40 p.m., VRFA units were dispatched to a car fire with exposure to the Muckleshoot Smoke shop. Units arrived to a vehicle with an engine compartment fire and no exposure. Firefighters utilized extrication equipment to gain access to the engine compartment and applied water to extinguish. The fire was deemed accidental.
  • Commercial Fire: (Auburn) On Saturday, May 21st at 2:02 p.m., firefighters responded to a fire on the second floor of a townhome connected to three other residences. Firefighters extinguished the fire and performed searches in the involved residence and exposures. Most of the damage was limited to the main involved unit. The VRFA performed a fire investigation.
  • Aid Call: (Lakeland Hills) On Monday, May 23rd at 02:02 a.m., firefighters responded to an adult female complaining of chest discomfort. The patient had recently been diagnosed with COVID. The patient was evaluated by firefighters. It was determined that the patient could stay at home for self-care.

VRFA Fire Investigations

  • On Saturday, May 21st, an incendiary fire occurred in the 2000 Block of M St NE. The fire was determined to be the result of juveniles playing with an ignition source and was confined to a room and its contents. The incident will result in Firestoppers referrals.

The Community Assistance, Referrals, and Education Services (CARES) is a joint program between VRFA,  King County Emergency Medical Services division South King Fire & Rescue, Enumclaw, and Mountainview Fire and Rescue departments. Each CARES response vehicle is staffed 8 a.m. – 7 p.m. by one firefighter from each department and a social worker. The CARES unit is sent on less emergent calls in non-transport capable vehicles to provide basic patient evaluation, assistance, specific basic life support treatment on scene, and arrange for transport if medically necessary. CARES also referred patients to community services where needed.
